Writer-in-residence

**Do you have a passion for the development of playwriting? Do you have deep knowledge of the UK theatre landscape? Have you had your own work produced? Are you an experienced mentor?**
We are looking for a Writer-in-Residence to develop their own work for RSC stages, work with the Co-Artistic Directors to give peer-to-peer mentoring and support to writers in developing their craft and chair a diverse group of freelance readers to read and report on new scripts.
In this newly created role and at a pivotal time in the RSC's history, you will work closely with the Co-Artistic Directors to bring an understanding of different perspectives and approaches to the development of new plays from theatre and other mediums.
Reporting to the Executive Producer (London), key areas of responsibility include (please see the full job description and person specification for the comprehensive list):
- To develop your craft as a playwright
- To develop your own plays for RSC stages
- To ensure the writer's voice is embedded in the organisation, giving a different perspective at the centre of conversations across teams, including but not limited to Digital, Producing, Development and Learning
- To give peer-to-peer mentoring and support to writers in developing their own craft
- To chair a diverse group of freelance readers to read and report on new scripts
- To work with the Co-Artistic Directors in identifying writers whose work may be of interest to the RSC
To be suitable for this role, it is essential that you have the following knowledge and experience:
- Experience of having own work produced by at least three different theatre companies and on a large scale
- Experience of peer-to-peer mentoring and support
- Experience of chairing readers in reporting on and discussing new plays
- Experience of the commissioning and development process from a writer's perspective
- Experience of the commissioning and development process in other media
This is a full time, fixed term position for 18 months based in London, with work across different locations including Stratford-upon-Avon. The hours are 40 per week, with occasional evening and weekend working.
