Casual Schools Appeals Clerk
**Working Hours**: as required and by mutual agreement
**Location**: Home/Salford Civic Centre Swinton/Gateway centres.
** About us**:
The Democratic Services Team is responsible for managing and supporting the Council’s decision making structure, including the Independent School Admission Appeals service. We currently have an exciting vacancy within our pool of clerks that support us to provide this important service.
** About you**
In this role you will be required to clerk school admission hearings, be required to take detailed notes of the proceedings, provide advice or seek advice for the panel, when necessary, write clear and accurate decision letters to appellants, keep the required records and ensure that appeals are processed in accordance with the law on school appeals. Although this is not essential, it is useful to understand legal processes and/or knowledge and experience of schools and education.
**About the role**
This is an exciting opportunity to support the delivery of the School Admission Appeals Service, which is the mechanism for parents/carers to appeal the decision to refuse admission of their child to their preferred school in the local area. School Admission Appeals are heard by Independent Appeal Panels consisting of three volunteers.
We are looking to recruit casual School Admission Appeal Clerks working as part of a group of trained clerks, who will respond efficiently and effectively to the demand for appeals.
All the appeal hearings are held during the day (from around 9am to around 5pm). We are currently holding hearings for In-year appeals two/three days every week and hold up to eight hearings a day (each 40 minutes long). From May to the end of July, we clerk the appeals for entry to Reception classes in primary schools and Year 7 in secondary schools for the start of the academic year each September. Appeal hearings are held every day during this period (except the half term school holidays). The appeals for individual schools are held on consecutive days and it often takes a number of days to hear the appeals for each school (at least 5 days in some cases).
A real benefit of this casual position is that you have a lot of flexibility about when you work and we will work with you to schedule your sessions for times and dates that are convenient for you.
The panels make their decisions, for each day of appeals or each school, at separate meetings on the same day or at the end of a week and clerks need to be available for these decision meetings to be able to draft the decision letters.
The appeal hearings are currently held online via Microsoft teams and if hearings are held face to face, we hold them at Civic Centre in Swinton or one of the city Gateway centres.
