Research Assistant

**Job Purpose**
You will contribute, and at grade 7 or 8 make a leading contribution, to the project Quantum Algorithms for Gravitational Wave Data Analysis working with Prof Sarah Croke, Dr Fiona Speirits and Dr Chris Messenger. This is an interdisciplinary project, a collaboration between the Quantum Theory group and the Institute for Gravitational Research at the University of Glasgow.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. Carry out a programme of research under the supervision of and in collaboration with Prof Croke, Dr Speirits, Dr Messenger and others.
2. Document research output including maintaining records and data bases as appropriate and contribute to the drafting of reports, papers and research presentations.
- Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team and group meetings, seminars and workshops/conferences as agreed with the PI, and across the wider community.
5. Contribute to the supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students and less experienced members of the Research Group.
6. Assist with administrative tasks and contribute to the running of the Research Group/School.
7. Contribute, as appropriate, to outreach and recruitment activities.
8. Carry out modest teaching activities (e.g. demonstrating) and the associated admin. as agreed with the PI and the Head of School.
9. Carry out administrative tasks associated with both research and teaching as assigned to you by the Head of School and/or Research Group Leader.
10. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
11. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as required by the Head of School and/or Research Group Leader.
12. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan: World Changers Together
**For appointment at Grade 7**:
13. Perform the above duties with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to planning, funding, collaborating and publishing research, and mentoring colleagues.

**Knowledge and Qualifications**
**Essential**:
A2 Knowledge of current research within the field of quantum information or gravitational wave data analysis, ideally both.

**Desirable**:
B1 An awarded (or recently submitted or near completion) PhD in Physics or in a related discipline.
**For appointment at Grade 7/8**:
**Essential**:
A4 Normally SCQF level 10 (PhD) in the relevant specialism or related area or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
**Skills**
**Essential**:
C2 Familiarity with quantum information concepts: qubits, gates, measurement, entanglement, at advanced undergraduate level.
C3 Communication and presentation skills, both oral and written, including public presentations and ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely.
C4 Interpersonal skills, including team working and a collegiate approach.
C5 Workload/time/project management skills as appropriate.
C6 Ability to program, preferably in Python.
**For appointment at Grade 7**:
C7 Self-motivation, initiative and independent thought/working.
C8 Ability to assist in the running of the research project and the group.
**For appointment at Grade 8**:
C9 Able to work individually as well as part of a team and manage staff members as appropriate.
**Experience**
**Essential**:
E1 Record of relevant research experience.
E2 Experience in scientific programming for data analysis, or in analysing or implementing quantum algorithms, or both.
E3 Experience of scientific writing.
E4 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner
**For appointment at Grade 7**:
E5 Evidence of an emerging track record of publications in a relevant field
E6 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher.
E7 Experience of publishing and presenting research results in international journals and at conferences.
E8 A degree of independence as evidenced by instances in which you have influenced the direction of a research project.
**For appointment at Grade 8**:
E9 Substantial, relevant research experience, including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field.
E10 Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities
E11 An established national/international profile

Salary will be Grade 6/7/8, £33,232 - £36,924 / £40,247 - £45,163 / £49,250 - £56,921 per annum.
