Preschool Room Leader

**Summary of Position**:
The individual will work in partnership with the team to coordinate planning, day-to-day organisation and operation of the nursery room. Providing high quality play opportunities and care for up to 35 children in an inclusive environment and in accordance with the ethos of _Kidzcare Norwood House_. Alongside the management of the nursery, the individual will support and assist all staff members in their daily role. Due to the nature of the job, flexibility is required.
**Hours**:8:00am - 6:00pm (4 days a week - Monday-Friday)
**Main Duties**:
- Have professional knowledge of young children and be aware and act upon the individual children's needs within the nursery. This will include children’s health and dietary needs as well as any additional support required. Be proactive in seeking additional support for children and ensure care plans are followed by all staff.
- Develop a stable, friendly and trusting relationship with the children
- Have a good working knowledge of the child-centred approach, and the relevant curriculum for your age group.
- Plan and provide a variety of stimulating play and development opportunities which will aid the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of the children in line with the relevant curriculum.
- Plan experiences based on individual child’s needs using next steps and evaluation.
- Use observation skills to gain knowledge and record the development of the children in your care. Use this knowledge to prepare developmental reports and up to date personal plans for children. Ensure children’s development is being tracked and developmental milestones known.
- Ensure environments are rich in learning and engaging for children with varying needs. Ensure literacy and numeracy is present throughout the environments.
- Have a good working knowledge of Curriculum for Excellence, SSSC codes of practice, Child at the Centre and Care Standards. Up to date knowledge of what is expected by Edinburgh Council locality.
- Be fully aware of Kidzcare policies and procedures. A Kidzcare Policies and Procedures booklet can be found in each of the nurseries for your reference.
- Ensure children have access to smooth transitions from nursery to primary school, including visits to the school, being involved in a transition project and having open correspondence with primary schools. Responsibility for ensuring transition reports are completed clearly by all staff and developmental milestones are clear.
**Working Relationships with Colleagues and Parents**:
- Be fully aware of the settling in procedures for new children and ensure guidelines are followed with correct administration information gathered. Also be aware of room move procedure, and ensure it is followed.
- Liaise and update parents on the individual progress of their child through written observations and daily verbal and written information. This includes six monthly personal plan reviews and ensuring all staff update these.
- Welcome parents and children to all sessions and ensure confidence is instilled in them as a carer of their child.
- Work as a member of the team; taking responsibility where necessary or if directed.
- Be confident in dealing with parent issues and able to sign post for different support.
**Responsibility for staff members in the workplace**:
- Supervise whole staff team. Assist in areas related to staff ratios, staff sickness, covering breaks and other centres.
- Ensure staff are following job description and practising duties required. Provide support to staff who need and it come up with action plans.
- Support staff with their self-evaluation and offer constructive feedback to help them grow and develop.
- Support management with tasks requested
- Support staff through team meetings to ensure they know what is expected of them and what they need further support with.
**Personal Development**:
- Attend appropriate training courses and keep up to date with methods of current practice.
- Attend where required nursery or Kidzcare meetings. Attend external meetings if required.
- Show examples of self-evaluation and work towards action plans that are set.
**Safety and Hygiene**:
- Be responsible for the safety of the children during the nursery session and ensure adequate precautions are taken. Including filling in daily checklists and reporting issues.
- Maintain a high standard of tidiness and cleanliness in the interest of hygiene including sterilising. Ensure staff are also performing these tasks.
- Report breakages and unsafe equipment immediately to your manager.
- Ensure any accidents to children are noted on an accident form and reported to the parents, and your line manager.
- Compliance with Care Inspectorate regulations and SSSC codes of practice.
- Ensure attendance records are accurate and updated. Ensure safe arrival and departure of children. Correct staff ratios are in place across all rooms.
