Established in April 2016, as part of recommendations set out in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review, the DNO was set up to oversee all aspects of nuclear business within the MOD and across the wider Enterprise. The Director General Nuclear is responsible for all submarines (from buying them through to disposal when they reach the end of their life), nuclear warheads, skills, related infrastructure and day-to-day nuclear policy.

Our task is to sustain and renew the nuclear deterrent so that it remains credible, effective and protects the people of the UK, now and in the future. We need a capable and credible nuclear deterrent to successfully deter the most extreme threats to our national security and way of life. DNO consists of the people, equipment and infrastructure required to make that happen.

The UK’s independent nuclear deterrent will remain essential to our security today, and for as long as the global security situation demands. On behalf of the Cabinet Office, the DNO Nuclear Policy Directorate develops and delivers the policy that provides the UK’s strategic deterrent and supports global security and stability. The Policy Engagement team works to ensure the long-term viability of the UK’s nuclear deterrent by improving national understanding of, and increasing support for, for the UK's nuclear deterrence policy among key domestic audiences.

**Job description**:
We are advertising for an enthusiastic, innovative and proactive communications professional to join our team as a specialist in external affairs and strategic planning. This exciting and challenging position will play a crucial role in planning and delivering coherent, consistent and engaging external affairs activity in one of the most complex policy and programme environments in Government.

You will work closely with communications and policy colleagues across DNO, Defence, and wider Government, as well as externally (including the Royal Navy and industry partners across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise) to design and deliver a nuclear deterrence policy engagement programme. You will be responsible for supporting and mapping strategic engagement to better inform communications activity, co-ordinate messaging, share intelligence, and build awareness and understanding of UK policy positions on nuclear deterrence.

**Person specification**:
As the DNO Policy Engagment and External Affairs Assistant, your responsibilities will include:

- Working with the DNO AH Policy Engagement and AH Communications to build the UK Nuclear Deterrence narrative;
- Supporting the delivery of the Nuclear Deterrence Communications Campaign, and ensure DNO Policy communications and engagement priorities and objectives are captured and delivered through other DNO and departmental communications activities where relevant;
- Supporting the design and delivery of communication and engagement strategies and campaigns to improve identified target audience understanding and support for UK nuclear deterrence policy;
- Collaborating with teams within DNO, Defence, wider Government and external partners such as the Royal Navy and industry to ensure consistency and amplification of key deterrence policy campaign messages through partnership working;
- Building relationships across DNO, Defence, other government departments, agencies and stakeholders so that they can share forthcoming activity of interest to DNO Policy priorities;
- Supporting your G7 team leader to devise overarching stakeholder communications and engagement strategies. Manage and monitor key products such as stakeholder maps and engagement plans, ensuring delivery matches strategic intent;
- Working with colleagues across DNO to produce briefings and communications material for key audiences to explain and build support for the UK’s nuclear deterrence policy;
- Building and delivering an outreach programme to increase awareness and understanding of UK nuclear deterrence policy for (i) key teams across Whitehall Departments
