**1. Key Purpose of Job**

1.1. To drive a vehicle, as part of the Waste & Recycling Service, working as a team member to undertake collections and removal of waste, recycling and refuse directly from residential properties in accordance with specifications of the service, ensuring that service performance is maintained and issues that arise are resolved as far as possible.

1.2. To undertake the essential daily vehicle inspections and checks of assigned vehicle before leaving the depot on assigned route. As well as undertaking the essential inspections and checks of the vehicle upon return to the depot.

1.3. To report any defects found on the vehicle to your line report following the necessary process to ensure the safety of the vehicle and any occupants.

1.4. Ensure that all required documentation is completed and signed off as the vehicle driver in accordance with company policy.

1.5. Being compliant for the ‘O’ licence requirements placed upon them as drivers/operators of a SWISCo vehicle.

1.6. The safe and responsible operation of the vehicle in accordance with the relevant legislation, driver certification, as well as in accordance with SWISCo’s Health and
Safety Policies, Safe Working Practices, Drivers Handbook and the Manufactures
Operating Instructions. To include driving in such a way as to reduce carbon emissions to ensure SWISCo meet any carbon neutral targets.

**2. Anticipated Outcomes of Post**

2.1. Supporting the completion of the scheduled collection(s) of domestic and commercial waste & recycling as per assigned route(s) which maximise efficiency and help to reduce carbon emissions.

2.2. Supporting SWISCo’s objective to ensure the delivery of an efficient and timely service in line with service frequency as specified in Torbay Council’s waste strategy.

2.3. Daily vehicle safety inspections and checks are completed and recorded to ensure any and all defects are found and reported in a timely manner to avoid any untimely breakdowns where possible.

2.4. The ensured safety of the vehicle, its occupants and others through responsible and effective driving whilst adhering to a safe system of work in accordance with SWISCo’s
Health & Safety expectations and policies.

2.5. Effective support of SWISCo’s strategy on fuel efficiency to reduce fuel costs and impact on the environment.

**3. List Key Duties and accountabilities of the post**

3.1. To drive assigned company LGV/HGV Class 2 vehicles safely and responsibly in accordance with both SWISCo and government regulations.

3.2. To take personal accountability for legal and ‘O’ Licence requirements as a driver, whilst undertaking statutory responsibilities around waste collections by maintaining a compliant Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence and that any relevant issues are reported to their Collections Manager where appropriate.

3.3. Ensuring the completion of tasks and objectives when driving assigned routes within the allocated timeframes using latest technology to develop and enhance service performance. Through effective and efficient route planning to maximise efficiency and helps reduce carbon emissions.

3.4. To ensure that their team of Loaders are utilised effectively, especially as a banksman whilst undertaking specific manoeuvres, during the round and that time is managed appropriately. Whilst also ensuring crew compliance in relation to the safety of the vehicle, personal and public safety whilst on the highway and at the transfer station. To not only include ensuring that the crew operate within safe systems of work but also that they use the correct PPE appropriately.

3.5. To undertake and participate in the sorting, separation and bulking of recyclable materials both at the kerbside and when at the depot. To include some accountability for the effective and efficient day to day performance of the vehicle and crew.

3.6. To ensure that all materials are safely secured within the vehicle, to avoid any unwanted movement whilst vehicle is in transit.

3.7. To walk around the vehicle and complete the essential daily driver inspections and checks prior to using the assigned vehicle at the start of every workday as well as when the vehicle is return at the end of the workday.

3.8. To be responsible and accountable for all completed documentation being legible and completed correctly in line with SWISCo and government requirements. Such documentation to be presented in a clean and kept manner.
