**Overview of Responsibilities**:
As Liquid Metal MHD Lead you will lead activities associated with validation of fusion components that utilise flowing liquid metals, with a particular focus on understanding magnetohydrodynamic phenomena through experimental work.

You will work with, and lead experimental work on, liquid metal aspects of facilities such as CHIMERA at FTF - a unique facility for testing component-scale equipment with liquid metals in strong magnetic fields.

**Key Duties**:

- Lead the development of testing of liquid metals, including magnetohydrodynamic effects, for validation of fusion components in representative environments
- Provide technical expertise on design and exploitation of liquid metal test facilities including experiment design, diagnostic techniques, and safe operational practices
- Provide technical input on use of computer simulation for modelling of magnetohydrodynamic phenomena within liquid metal cooled components to enable component validation
- Shape and deliver UKAEA’s strategy for liquid metal testing and component validation by building capability in this growing area
- Collaborate extensively across internal and external groups and programmes to solve liquid metal testing and component validation challenges for fusion

Full-time**Qualifications**:
This role could be at one of two levels.

Both levels will require:

- Demonstrable experience in eExperimental techniques for understanding liquid metal thermal hydraulics and heat transfer, with a particular focus on magnetohydrodynamic phenomena
- Track record of design and exploitation of liquid metal test facilities including experiment design
- Demonstrable experience of sSafe operation of liquid metal test systems, particularly within a research environment
- Application of numerical simulation techniques for modelling liquid metal flows with magnetohydrodynamic phenomena
- Ability to Working work independently in a multidisciplinary environment
- Excellent communication skills
- Holds, or working towards, chartered status with an appropriate body

In addition, at the more senior level the role will requireyou will:

- Demonstrable experience of Eevaluating and leading technical strategy at a senior level

Desirable Experience and Qualifications:

- Leading or managing teams and supervising other staff
- Experience in writing research grant proposals
