**Job summary**:
The UK is operating an independent trade policy for the first time in over 50 years. This is a tremendously exciting time to work on Trade Negotiations, which is an important enabler for growth, and at the heart of the UK’s relationship with global trading partners.

The Digital Trade and Telecommunications team is an important part of the UK’s services trade agenda. As the global economy increasingly shifts towards digital, goods, services and information (including data) are moving between countries more frequently, and easily, than ever before. Firms selling goods or providing services digitally have taken local and national markets to a global scale. The telecommunications sector, which includes mobile, landline, satellite, and internet technologies, provides the infrastructure that enables digital trade and is a major sector for trade and investment in its own right.

The Digital Trade and Telecommunications Team’s vision is is for the UK to be a global leader in digital trade, with a network of international agreements that drive investment, productivity and economic growth across the UK. The team delivers that vision through:

- Negotiating modern digital trade and telecommunications provisions in Free Trade Agreements.
- Working with forward-leaning partners in the World Trade Organization.
- Promoting digital trade and telecoms standards e.g. through the G7, G20, OECD, the UN and international standards bodies.
- Pioneering innovative solutions to digital trade and telecommunications through UK thought leadership, engaging with business and wider communications.

The postholder will work closely with a network of contacts within the department, across Whitehall and in industry, to drive this agenda forward. This is a continually changing area and the postholders will be expected to flex their work to deliver against departmental priorities.

**Job description**:
The post holder will:

- Support their Chapter Lead and their Deputy to deliver telecommunications negotiations of telecommunications chapters for several Free Trade Agreements. This will include negotiation logistic support, supporting leads in the live negotiations, and providing policy expertise.
- Develop UK trade policy positions on telecommunications by working with both policy and legal colleagues across Government. This will include learning how to develop international trade text and negotiation strategies.
- Support policy work on elements of UK digital trade policy, providing cross-cutting support to Digital Chapter leads.
- Support the Chapter Lead to navigate a complex and diverse stakeholder network, including industry and government departments and taking account of views in policy development.
- Support the Chapter Lead to advise and brief senior officials and ministers on policy issues related to telecommunications and digital trade policy.

**Hybrid working**

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
