Primary purpose and function of position:
Reporting to the Packaging First Line Manager (FLM), the main purpose of this position is to support the shift and organise the team to meet production schedules, support breakdowns and cover for other operators during breaks.

The role holder is required to be fully capable of performing all Packaging Operator tasks on all machines in the department which include various day-to-day functions, from set-up and loading to operating machinery with efficiency. Packaging operators ensure the machine’s performance allows every aspect of production to run smoothly, undertaking daily / weekly / monthly activities for the Packaging Department to meet KPI requirements for cost, quality, service and behaviours through agreed ways of working.

Education: English & Mathematics Standard Grades or equivalent.

Experience: Repair skills, Packaging and or Engineering based qualifications or experience preferred but not necessary

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

- Facilitate appropriate allocation of operator resource from within the team to staff all workstations within the packaging hall
- Support the team during breakdowns and repairs and aid in RCA (Root Cause Analysis)
- Escalate issues and report to FLM to determine quick resolutions
- Liaise and effectively communicate with the packaging team and other departments to ensure that packaging operations run smoothly and efficiently.
- Act as a role model for safety; advocate team members to take personal responsibility for their own safety and take action when unsafe behaviour is observed or reported.
- Coach and support the team using the VPO tools and processes to ensure the packaging team deliver results whilst maintaining excellent housekeeping standards.

Multi-Operators should be able to carry out all the tasks that is expected of Packaging Operator:

- Operate packaging equipment in order to ensure the department delivers finished goods of the right quality, at the right time and at the right cost to the logistics department
- Carry out product and process quality checks and changeovers to quality standards and SOP’s (Standard Operator Procedures) whilst minimizing the impact to the production plan
- Take pride in the cleanliness of their machine and area
- Undertake department-run and self-driven continuous improvement activities to ensure the department meets all its KPI (Key Performance Indicators) Targets
- Inspect, clean and maintain equipment to ensure everything works as it should
- Troubleshoot and resolve basic machine issues
- Collaborate with maintenance technicians to determine the root cause and eliminate issues.
- Escalate issues via VPO processes and communicate effectively with FLM’s and maintenance teams regarding recurring problems and needs for repair
- Undertake training for new skills & tasks within Packaging Department. Upskill others to drive toward an autonomous high performing team.
- Undertake any packaging related tasks, as directed by the First Line Manager

Machine operators to comply with:

- Statutory & Legal requirements
- Safety, Health & Environment requirements
- Any appropriate packaging or food hygiene safety regulations as defined by policy or legislation, such as HACCP
- Product & Process Quality requirements
- Basic asset care requirements
