Medicines Policy Lead

As a Medicines Policy Lead, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in leading the strategic planning, development and delivery of key policies across medicines programmes. This is a senior policy role and the applicant will need to be comfortable in thinking around complex medicines issues, developing proposals and seeking buy-in for the operational delivery of those proposals.
The team has a variety of skills, knowledge and experience and works on a range of national medicines policy areas including: supporting medicines supply during the Covid-19 pandemic, planning for EU exit medicines supply, the uptake of best value biological medicines, low priority prescribing, medicines optimisation and prescribing practice following the re-scheduling of medicinal cannabis products.
Specific policy responsibilities for the postholder will be determined on appointment, but key aspects of this role will be to:
- Liaise closely with colleagues across the sector to drive a coherent strategy around the medicines and diagnostics programmes to support the delivery ofNHS Long Term Plancommitments, and ensure alignment across NHS England and NHS Improvement;
- Develop and communicate the strategy and operational policies to support this vision;
- Driving reform and supporting organisational change and the uptake of initiatives that support excellence;
- Developing and maintaining key stakeholder relationships;
- Engaging with key strategic regional and national policy makers to inform development of strategy and policies. To this end, regular travel throughout England will be required.
- Developing and championing new initiatives or projects as necessary
- Providing expertise of best practice methodologies, regulatory requirements, policy imperatives, innovation and technological developments and stakeholder knowledge.
As the needs of the programmes develop, and given the interlinkages with other areas of the Directorate’s work, an ability to work flexibly across policy portfolios is essential.
This role best suits an individual who is comfortable working independently as well as part of a project team and is able to rapidly build effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
