Base Pay: $25.57 Hourly
SUMMARY: Supervises employees and inmates on a particular shift at a jail facility or in a support service such as inmate transport. Insures that health, safety and welfare measures and procedures are carried out by the staff members and are observed by inmates.
The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Prepares shift briefing and/or discussions to begin the tour of duty with shift officers.
Documents assignments and absentee reports.
Conducts briefing with outgoing supervisor(s) about the overall operation.
Insures the accuracy and authority of prisoners brought into the facility for incarceration.
Maintains security of the Jail staff, inmates and visitors within the jail facility.
Provides for the general welfare of the inmates.
Directs and motivates employees to perform at their capacity in conformance with the standards of the operation.
Encourages employees in career development and training activities.
Makes certain that materials and/or equipment are available and utilized correctly.
Assists, when needed, with the pat, frisk and strip search of incoming prisoners and the restraint of prisoners to prevent injury to themselves and others.
Assists, when needed, with the documentation of incoming prisoners’ personal property and monies.
Assists, when needed, with the process of booking incoming prisoners and the placing and removing of prisoners in/out of holding cells.
Approves all required and necessary paperwork for the release of a prisoner.
Supervises, conducts and participates when needed in the searching of cell units for possible contraband.
Imposes corrective measures and/or disciplinary action to be taken regarding infractions committed by prisoners, employees and/or officers.
Supervises, conducts and participates when needed on random fire drills, jail inspections, prisoner-public visitations, etc.
Interacts with the public, bondsmen, attorneys and/or law enforcement agencies concerning jail business.
Attends all designated meetings pertaining to the department/jail division.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Lieutenant (Corrections) manages subordinate supervisors (sergeants) who are responsible for additional correctional officers overseeing a population of several hundred inmates. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 1) Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in criminal justice or a related field, plus two years of supervisory experience in a civilian correctional setting; OR 2) two years of college plus four years of responsible supervisory experience in a civilian correctional setting, supplemented by courses in criminology and supervision; OR 3) any equivalent combination of relevant experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Basic Certification as a Corrections Officer from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education is required. Certification as a Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education may be preferred but not required.
