About the job

**Summary**:
The Home Office is here to make the UK safer. Border Force is a Law Enforcement arm of the Home Office with primary responsibility for UK Border Security, including counter terrorism, immigration and customs matters.

We are responsible for handling the UK border control by implementing immigration and customs regulations and working with the wider Home Office on counter terrorism, organised crime, modern slavery and trafficking. Border Force has five operational regions in the UK: North, Central, Heathrow, South and South East & Europe. These regions have responsibility for securing the border 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at the UK’s 140 seaports, airports, 200+ general aviation ports, postal depots and international rail network. This includes the Eurostar from Brussels and Paris to St Pancras International and the Eurotunnel from Coquelles to Cheriton, where Border Force has juxtaposed controls.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a team that both protects and enhances the UK economy. Our work is varied and rewarding, attracting people from all backgrounds and walks of life.

**Job description**:
The Border Force Europe IT team is a small team consisting of two Higher Officers and five Officers whose primary role is the day to day maintenance of the IT equipment at all of the juxtaposed ports (Calais and Dunkirk Ferry ports and all of the Eurotunnel and Eurostar train termini); ensuring that the internal IT systems are kept as close as possible to 100% functionality at all times.

You will carry out regular checks and audits of the IT equipment within the regions. Carrying out fault finding and swapping out faulty equipment where applicable. The team covers a very wide area and you will need to visit sites as widely spread as St Pancras and Amsterdam as well as Northern France and Belgium.

There are also office-based shifts where officers deal with enquiries by telephone and the team mailbox including requests for new accounts and account re-sets as well as requests for mobile equipment and support from project managers.

Due to the diverse nature of work that the team cover, you will be required to have experience in, or be willing to develop knowledge of each area of work covered by the team.

The below is indicative of the current requirements, but they will evolve as the business moves forward.

The team works a five-day week of 8 ½ hour shifts but due to the distances involved, some shifts may be much longer than this and there are occasional early starts (pre 06:00). There exists however, the opportunity to make duty requests but the needs of the business take priority.

There are long drives to locations such as Amsterdam and Paris and your role will require occasional overnight stays. The team regularly works weekends and public holidays and there are occasional night shifts.

Your role will involve moving heavy equipment and sometimes working in cramped areas and under desks and so you will need to be certain that you can fulfil the full range of duties.

**Responsibilities**:

- Auditing and checking the function of the IT equipment within the region. Wherever, possible rectifying faults or, where this is not possible, replacing the faulty equipment.
- Raising incidents on faulty equipment and liaising with the suppliers or the embedded Fujitsu engineers to get a replacement as soon as possible.
- Supporting Home Office Digital, Data, and Technology (HO DDaT) colleagues and project managers by carrying out fault finding or equipment installation on their behalf and reporting back findings.
- Liaising with stakeholders and enablers to ensure the best outcomes and efficiency of the IT for the business.
- Completing necessary audit returns and submitting these to WICU.
- Setting up ancillary accounts and resetting/arranging reset of passwords where applicable.
- Ordering mobile equipment for colleagues after checking necessary authorisations are in place, testing equipment and despatching to colleagues.
- Answering queries on IT, signposting users to the responsible stakeholder or supplier where applicable.
- Where you do not know the answer, you must be prepared to send a holding reply whilst you find out the answer.

**Essential Criteria**
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to drive forward efficiency and compliance within the business.
- The ability to collate, manage and record all data, reviewing practices to support the business.
- Good organisational and problem solving skills to ensure identification of fault
