An exciting development opportunity has arisen on the Oncology Critical Care Unit for a clinical practice educator.
You should be a highly motivated professional with extensive Critical Care experience, who wishes to develop their clinical knowledge, education and leadership skills. You must be an excellent leader who is driven to improve patient care and experience, ensuring the delivery of exceptional, high quality care.
Our patients undergo highly specialised and often complex surgery across the Colorectal, Urology, Gynaecology and Plastic Surgery specialties. The Christie is a world leader and national centre for Surgery. The 8 bedded unit also manages medical patients across all specialities who require critical care support and management.
Evidence of critical care experience is essential. Previous education / management experience is desirable in this instance
The development of strategies for the induction, education and continuing professional development of nursing staff.
The post holder will provide expert advice and take the lead in the development of shared policies and protocols in line with national recommendations.
To ensure that an atmosphere conducive to learning and development is fostered.
To be responsible for developing strategies and lead on the induction and preceptorship of all new staff.
To lead on the maintenance and updating of the induction package.
To plan, coordinate and facilitate the training and development of staff in all essential clinical skills.
To lead staff towards clinical expertise.
To lead on the development and training of staff to take on new clinical roles and services.
To ensure staff maintain compliance with essential training and support staff to attend mandatory classroom learning.
To support staff members to learn and reflect on their practice.
Ensure there is a robust system in place for sharing learning
Support with retention strategies for the area.
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.
We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with the Senior Practice Educator, Senior Sister, & Matron, the post holder will be closely involved clinically with the development of all grades of staff including pre and post registration students.
Work with the Senior Practice Educator, Senior Sister, Matron, and senior nursing team to identify strategies for practice development.
Work with the Senior Practice Educator, Senior Sister, Matron, and senior nurses to identify and implement structures to support best practice.
Focus on staff support and health and wellbeing promotion
Promote and incorporate research/evidence-based practice within the clinical setting.
Facilitate awareness of professional and educational development by acting as a resource person.
To ensure the provision of excellent, compassionate evidence-based nursing care for the patients and their families.
Work to develop and support best practice in all aspects of acute and critical oncology care.
Provide teaching and guidance to support junior staff to complete their Step 1, 2 and 3 competencies.
Ensure there is a robust system in place for sharing learning
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Following patient referral, demonstrate excellent skills in taking patients’ history through medical notes, verbal report and interrogation of investigations
To assess the critically unwell patient, initiate treatment and monitor effects based on evidenced based practice. To Liaise with the OCCU Consultant / patient team with patients causing concern
Provide advice on appropriate airway management, oxygen therapy, cardiovascular support in the event of acute deterioration
To assess and interpret complex patient conditions using relevant blood results and investigations in order to compare and choose treatment options
Provide emotional support for patients and their relatives especially when discharged from OCCU to the ward environment
Use a concise documentation framework when recording monitoring and treatment plans in the notes ensuring clarity, this should also be reinforced with verbal communication to the relevant team
Identify clinical risks that potentially inhibit the identification and initial managemen
