**Summary**:
As the most prominent scientific expert in Government, the Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) operates at the cutting edge of science for policy, whilst also performing the vital role of supporting and advising the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and senior leaders in the Civil Service to ensure that Government decisions are based on the best possible evidence and analysis.

With the ability to convene and galvanise input from the experts spanning the full range of scientific and engineering disciplines in academia and industry, the GCSA should expect to objectively advise on some of the most critically important issues facing the UK, not least climate change, the cost of living crisis and the UK’s resilience to respond to future emergencies featuring on the UK’s National Risk Register.

The GCSA plays an important role in building science capability across Government, serving as head of profession to the extensive scientific and engineering community, which includes a strong, impactful and collegiate network of Chief Scientific Advisers who are focused on science related to their respective departments as well as wider government agendas. Furthermore, the GCSA is supported by the Government Office for Science (GO-Science), which hosts the secretariat for the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and comprises a highly professional team tasked with ensuring that Government policies and decisions are informed by the best scientific evidence and strategic long-term thinking.
- While operationally independent, GO-Science is, for administrative purposes, part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)_
