We are looking for a system administrator to oversee the effective operation of our computer systems, servers, Linux
- and cloud-based environments. The successful applicant will be responsible for designing, integrating, and implementing IT systems and maintaining infrastructure, equipment and software. A core component of the role will involve liaising with our scientists and bioinformaticians to anticipate and strategically plan for future requirements.

The successful applicant will be working in a fast-paced environment, supporting the development of the next generation of cancer therapies.

Activities

Maintain and enhance on-site and cloud-based computing platforms

Implement and administer Linux based tools to enable bioinformatics activities

Support and mentor team members in the development of Linux understanding and expertise

Ensure provision of appropriate data storage, backup and resilience

Co-ordinate with existing IT support services and helpdesk

Understand business and bioinformatics requirements and plan for future needs

Manage inventory of hardware and software, set and work within IT budgets

Optimise IT policies and ensure compliance with standards and best practice

Essential

A degree in computer science, or similar field, or relevant experience in a technical environment

Experience and demonstrable ability with system administration

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, managing competing deadlines

Ability to communicate effectively with IT specialists, bioinformaticians and scientists

Good understanding of data storage practices and IT safety strategies

Knowledge of cloud infrastructure

Desirable

Familiarity with safety and management requirements of data structures and repositories (e.g. data lakes, data warehouses etc.)

Working experience with cloud infrastructure (e.g to enable bioinformatics pipelines)

Containerisation experience, preferably Docker or Singularity

Experience with developing and executing relational database queries using SQL

Experience with version control

Knowledge of computer programming

Experience of sequence analysis or bioinformatics

Experience setting and managing budgets

Initiative, and a willingness and propensity to take on responsibility

A collaborative attitude with a flair for problem-solving

Keen learner with an enthusiasm to develop new skills
