Interventional Scrub Practitioner

Role summary The Interventional Scrub Practitioner (ISP) will be responsible for providing skilled clinical and technical advanced assistance as a member of the Interventional Radiology Team. The ISP will demonstrate effective leadership skills and promote and encourage teamwork. The ISP will work closely with senior staff and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of clinical practice and staff development as part of the Radiology Interventional Team. The ISP will lead and participate in the assessment of patient care needs implementing and maintaining agreed standards of care.
The ISP will be able to manage own workload, plan the work of others and work autonomously. The ISP will practice within their Professional Code of Conduct and provide high quality care to patients undergoing procedures within Interventional Radiology and adhere to and understand all Trust and local policies and procedures. The ISP will be flexible in their approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified as appropriate to knowledge and training. Key responsibilities The role of the Interventional Scrub Nurse will include but not be limited to the following: Coordinate and manage Interventional procedures.
Liaise with consultants and anaesthetists to assess requirements for future procedure lists and ensure those requirements are met. To perform as a competent ISP following competency based assessments appropriate to knowledge and training. Take the lead with planning, delivering and evaluation of patient care. Supervision of all grades of staff within the sphere of authority, acting as a clinical lead and expert to junior, unqualified and less experienced staff.
Participate in the process of recruitment, selection and retention of staff Working with members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team following local policies, protocols and standards Adhere to safety rules to protect staff and patients when undergoing imaging procedures in accordance of trust policies. To provide a suitable and safe environment for the physical, psychological and spiritual wellbeing for staff, patients and their relatives/ carers. Awareness of the effective management of resources within the department Participate in clinical trials, audit and research when required Contribute to the implementation and development of services. Clinic Plan and prepare equipment according to patients needs and procedures.
To provide daily professional advice and support to the Radiology department assisting the radiologist and radiographers with a wide range of Interventional procedure Maintain user competency for relevant equipment both existing and new, teaching, supervising and signing off junior members of staff Implement and evaluate patient care appropriately and support new and junior members of the team. Perform the necessary pre and post-op checks and adhere to the principles of the WHO checklist Following the completion of in house training competency training the INS will provide skilled assistance to consultants and anesthetists within Interventional Radiology. Assisting in sterile procedures (scrub) which includes passing appropriate equipment to the operator removing them from the catheter safely and assisting in highly complex Interventional Radiology procedures observing the highest standards of aseptic technique. Fully understand the implications for post procedural guidelines and monitoring of the patient.
Monitoring and assessing patients condition, responding to changes in condition, proposing / making changes to care plan as required and escalating concerns as appropriate Co-ordinate and document planned patient care during Interventional procedures and act on changes to the patients condition and interpret the significance of data observed and recorded. Directing and participating in the manoeuvring and the positioning of conscious and unconscious patients Analyse situations and instigate emergency procedures as required. Handover and transferring responsibility of care to colleagues, ensuring appropriate information and care is relayed Supporting and re-assessing patients during procedures. Communicate with patients, relatives and visitors in an appropriate and courteous manner Working within guidelines of NMC and HPC Codes of Practice depending upon registration To be aware of the management of drugs and to adhere to local policies and administer drugs as prescribed Maintaining accurate records, including electronic records Following in house training to become competent in using the CRIS system in order to complete day lists for patients undergoing Interventional procedures and be able to scan correct patient documentation.
