Job Description*
Who are we looking for?*
We are recruiting an experienced Chartered Safety Professional for our Head of Safety, Health, Quality, Environment and Resilience (SHEQR) to develop, champion and lead the delivery of the strategic agenda for SHEQR across our organisation. We have a world leading reputation and you will play a pivotal role in the development of the safety and environmental culture contributing to UKAEA's mission.
Providing technical knowledge, expertise and advice on all aspects of SHEQR best practice, you will be a strategic planner and have exceptional leadership and influencing skills. You will have proven experience in a senior position successfully managing and motivating a specialist team, leading individuals to embrace change and ensure their capabilities are developed.
The ability to liaise and build strong relationships with key stakeholders is critical, as is the confidence to seek opportunities to challenge the status quo for continuous improvement. You will have a highly developed commercial awareness and will be comfortable taking calculated risks to deliver outcomes and increase productivity in a delivery focused environment.
**What will you be responsible for?**
- Develop and implement a SHEQR strategy, operating model and plan that enables continual improvement that supports the UKAEA Strategy, BEIS requirements, standards and legislation
- Manage, coach and lead the SHEQR Team, ensuring that the organisational structure, technical and behavioural competencies are aligned in order to deliver optimised advice and service to the business
- Provide oversight and management information of SHEQR matters via Programme and Project Boards, challenging performance as appropriate.
- Act as the Chief Operating Officer's key advisor on Safety and Environmental legislative and statuary compliance issues
- Lead in the development of a proactive and continuous improvement SHEQR culture, proactively engaging colleagues to embed this
- Lead the strategic co-ordination of Business Resilience (Business Continuity, Emergency Planning and Security) plan and in conjunction with the COO, lead the UKAEA’s crisis reaction team
- Deliver the organisational SHEQR capability to support the delivery model; maintaining structure and focus on delivery whilst identifying and developing best practice
- Act as a role model and provide technical knowledge, expertise and advice to the organisation, Directors and relevant committees in SHEQR matters in accordance with legislation, standards and best practice

**Please note**: this role is based on site at Culham with travel to other UKAEA sites on a regular basis.

Qualifications*
Essential skills, experience and competence required*
- Chartered membership of one or more of the Professional Organisations in Occupational Safety, Health, Environment or Quality and undertaking a scheme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) e.g. chartered member of Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (CMIOSH)
- Knowledge and experience of quality, security, occupational health & safety and environmental management systems and relevant areas of civil and criminal law implemented in complex and/or industrial environments
- NEBOSH Diploma (Occupational Health & Safety and Environment) minimum or equivalent
- Ability to provide strong, visible leadership in SHEQR
- Highly developed organisational awareness, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence, persuade and communicate with people at all levels within the organisation and regulatory bodies.
