Working for an innovative and dynamic business, we have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Design for Manufacture engineer.
Working as part a factory based technical team, under the leadership of the Head of department, the DfMn engineer will influence the design direction to optimise quality performance & process efficiency.
The DfM Engineer will be responsible for interpreting the requirements of the Product Design Team to ensure that the design for manufacture is driven by lean manufacturing techniques and ensure compliances to statutory regulations. They will initiate designinnovation and improvements to the design and advise & liaise with the engineering team on the best way to assemble parts and assemblies. Ensure any changes and improvements are validated by the design teams to ensure compliance. Every element and interfaceof the designs must be meticulously designed to be lean and capable of mass production as well as not impact negatively the delivery and install processes.
The DfM Engineer will also play a pivotal role in driving and controlling the Engineering Change Request system, as the product design evolves, maintaining the physical and digital records of both the base designs, the variants and the 'as built' records. Theywill manage the change process for the team and delegate tasks and projects to key team members.
**Primary Responsibilities**:
- Under the guidance of the Head of department and working with other key departments, liaise with internal customers and design consultants to ensure smooth delivery of the project through all stages of design.
- Assist on all stages of the new product design process to control and interrogate the activities of external design consultants and internal design team members.
- Providing expert technical advice, maintaining consistent link to the factory floor, site electricians, plumbers, technical teams and quality. Ensuring technical knowledge and awareness of impacts on regulations.
- Identify and manage risks identifying design solutions to eliminate, reduce or control risks during the manufacture, installation, and final operation of the building. They will be responsible of ensuring all elements of the design are Risk assessed and ensurethe companies compliance under CDM regulations in the form of a DfMEA.
- Ensure that projects are delivered in accordance with BIM Protocols
- Ensure the DfM team work in a safe and sensible manner within the boundaries of the Company Health and Safety Policy and any additional site restrictions.
- Ensure the DfM team meet programme targets and keep up to date the master document with progress
- Mentor junior members of the team to ensure they meet their job spec requirements and guide them to improve their technical and problem solving skills
- Look at product innovations from the market place to drive efficiencies in design and process for the line. Liaise with key individuals in other departments to gain the best solution that suits everyone.
- Capture learning in the form of 'Design standards' to prevent recurrence of issues & embed efficiency in the approach to designing a component or assembly.
- Produce 'mark-up' & concept designs to enable line trials & continuous improvement initiatives to be realised in a timely manner.
- Optimise design to maximise material yields.
**Personal Specifications**:
Qualifications & Training:
- A good degree in an engineering or science based discipline
- English and Maths pass at GCSE / 'O' Level
**Experience**:
- Preferable experience in a manufacturing field, ideally with new product design development & Innovation
- Preferable experience in a 3D modelling software package like Autodesk Inventor, Revit or similar.
- Working knowledge and experience in producing a DfMEA.
- Understanding of an effective Standard operative procedures & line balancing and how to interpret this information to design with assembly sequence in mind.
- Knowledge of developing design for manufacture on CNC & automated equipment.
- Experience of reacting to quality concerns through a structured problem solving approach, with containment of issues as a priority.
