Linux Engineer

**Linux/Unix Engineer - HYBRID WORKING**

**Job role**

To provide a customer focused second and third line infrastructure support service for a large estate of mission critical Linux and Unix servers and associated infrastructure. The Unix team resolves technical issues and delivers projects to the client'sIT standards and the customer’s satisfaction.

**Skills and Experiences Required**
- A broad knowledge of UNIX/Linux platforms and operating system fundamentals
- Ability to effectively manage a large server estate via best practice configuration management and large-scale automation
- Understanding of ITIL concepts, including the management of incidents and implementation of change
- Ability to implement and troubleshoot common technologies such as HTTP, HTTPS, LDAP (client and server-side), Samba, FTP, rsync, MQ Series
- In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP networking concepts
- Ability to diagnose network-related faults and performance issues (taking network packet traces with tcpdump and Wireshark, and using them to identify problems)
- Broad understanding of network security, including firewalls (ideally PIX and/or Checkpoint)
- Knowledge of IPSEC VPNs, setup and troubleshooting
- In-depth knowledge of x86 virtualisation (ideally VMware) and the techniques and tools used to manage it effectively
- Understanding of network attached storage (ideally Network Appliance), monitoring and troubleshooting
- Understanding of Java Virtual Machines, monitoring and performance tuning
- Ability to automate common tasks via scripting in shell, perl or python
- Strong ability to translate business requirements into robust, supportable technical solutions
