Douglas, United Kingdom Isle of Man Government Full time

**About the role and our team**

Join our team within the Harbours Division as a Senior Watch Officer

Within this role you will deal with all Harbour and Coastguard operational matters, overseeing vessel movements within the Douglas Harbour Limits, providing safe navigation in and out of the port.

You will be responsible for the safe operation of important Harbour infrastructures such as the Millennium Road Bridge, linkspans, flapgates and more. As well as this, you will provide berthing advice to ships masters, organise routine/emergency maintenance requirements and in the absence of a senior manager, decide whether to close part of the port in the case of an emergency.

You will have the chance to assist the IOM Coastguard in co-ordinating Search and Rescue operations on the coast and in Manx Territorial Waters.

During out of hour’s periods, you’ll have opportunities to undertake added responsibilities to increase your operational and incident management experience.

You will also get the chance to be the lead officer on a two person shift, where you will be responsible for all Marine Operation Centre (MOC) operations, during the shift. The three shifts are:

- Day - 6:50am to 15pm
- Evening - 14:50pm to 11pm
- Night - 22:50pm to 7am

No two shifts are the same in this role, as changing operational requirements and weather conditions always influence our tasks each day.

**What can this role offer me?**

Although Senior Watch Officers in the MOC may be busy reacting and dealing with any number of Harbour and Coastguard issues, shifts may be operationally quiet, leaving opportunities for you to develop your skills through internal and external accredited training and courses.

We are constantly developing training packages and personal development systems to enhance performance and succession planning, this included opportunities for advancements to reach Senior Management Level, should this be something you’re interested in.

Any maritime, leadership and management qualifications that would be beneficial to both you and the Division would be considered, and if approved may be fully funded by the Department.

The role also attracts a shift allowance and premium rates for weekend and bank holiday work. Free car parking will be available to you.
