**Job description**:
The role of External Affairs teams in government is to build and maintain relationships with influential individuals and organisations for the public benefit. You will need exceptional judgement, the ability to lead and motivate a high-performing team, acute political awareness, and the ability to create strong stakeholder networks and advocates. You should be comfortable working to tight deadlines under pressure and working at pace with senior colleagues, including at Secretary of State and Permanent Secretary level.

This role reports to the Department’s Deputy Director for Media and External Affairs. You will be part of the Senior Leadership Team for the Communications Department and a member of the Government Communication Service profession.

**Responsibilities**:
Key accountabilities of the role include the ability to:

- Lead a high performing team that develops and implements comprehensive stakeholder engagement strategies on a range of priority issues to help the Secretary of State, Ministers and the DFT’s senior officials achieve their objectives.
- Provide strategic advice to Ministers and our Executive Committee on stakeholder engagement and handling, working closely with senior officials, as well as the media, strategic communications and digital teams.
- Build close working relationships with a diverse network of external and internal stakeholders to create advocates for the DFT’s priorities, run the Transport Communications Network with senior communications leaders from the transport sector and seek to bring new and diverse voices into DFT’s policy making.
- Use insight to shape strategies and evaluate the impact of DFT’s external affairs as well as stretch the team to continually raise standards, identify best practice and focus on continuous professional development.
- Be an active member of the Communications Senior Leadership Team, working to improve communications capability and professional development across the Directorate.
- Take responsibility for improving the quality of stakeholder engagement across the department and its agencies, and be an active member of cross government External Affairs Forums to identify best practice.
- Deputise for the Deputy Director on occasion with senior officials, Ministers and the Transport Secretary.

**About You**

To be successful in this role you will be able to build excellent stakeholder relationships engaging with enthusiasm to achieve progress on shared objectives. You will be proactive and will be confident even at the heart of a crisis, taking on board views and challenging assumptions while being willing to compromise if beneficial to progress. As the Head of External affairs, you will bring your strong leadership capabilities while coaching and empowering a team to enable their development and growth. You will have confidence in your ability to make a real impact leading from the front in a senior communications role to achieve high-profile priorities.

**Additional Information**

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
