- Job description- As a member of our Field Operations Team, you will be working on our rivers and tidal defences, to prevent and respond to flooding and pollution.
You will be working as part of a team maintaining our rivers and repairing and maintaining our flood defences to provide a high standard of flood protection to our many customers and local communities. You will be expected to work professionally, efficiently, safely and to a high standard. Our reputation depends on the people that work for us.
This is a Manual, active outdoor role that will need you to be out in all weather conditions, whether it’s cutting weed in the river as part of our annual maintenance programme or repairing a fence at one of our many critical sites. You could be assisting with the removal of a fallen tree from the river or responding to a pollution at a fishery, every day will be different.
Our response can be called upon 24hrs a day 365 days a year and you will be expected to take your place on a rota for this once trained. Salary is supplemented with standby payments to reflect this.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role when qualified and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- You will be working as part of a diverse team of 13. the role is open to anyone. We carry out an annual maintenance programme on our rivers and watercourses in North Kent, from Bexley to Rochester and from Westerham to isle of grain. This can be in channel weed cutting, grass cutting, asset management and small-scale construction works. We also respond to incidents, such as flooding. environmental and pollution, both day and night.
- Experience/skills required- You should show a positive, adaptable approach, a ‘can do’ attitude as a committed team player. You will be well organised keeping your tools, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in top condition. You will need good communication skills to work with customers and partners.
- You should have the necessary practical ability, an understanding in environmental awareness as well as a hands-on approach
- An understanding of site health and safety requirements would be an advantage
- Able to carry out tasks and answer queries effectively
- Competent using IT devices, such as an iPad, and willing to learn our in-house systems
- Undertake specialist training as and when required
- Some experience with vegetation management or construction would be an advantage.
- Some experience in asset operation or maintenance/incident response/use of equipment/tools is an advantage, however full training will be provided. More important is having a positive “can do” attitude.
