Job description

Charterhouse, a prestigious Independent School, is seeking to employ a highly organised, methodical and knowledgeable School Nurse to join a successful and thriving team of nurses, based in the Hunt Health Centre, to provide clinically effective, high qualitynursing care to the pupils.

The Hunt Health Centre provides 24 hour a day, term time only medical support to pupils, through a team of nurses working shifts between them, including the Sister in Charge.

The role entails organisation and running of daily surgeries, provision of first aid and emergency care, management of the immediate care of pupils with mental health conditions and management of the immediate care of pupils with sports injuries.

The ideal School Nurse will be a registered nurse on the current NMC register with relevant post-registration experience. S/he will have experience in managing accident & emergency situations as well as school nursing and/or Primary Health Care nursing experience.

IT literacy, with a willingness to learn using new technology, is an essential requirement for this post.

Main Duties

Nursing

Provide a high standard of service within NMC guidelines to pupils, members of staff and any visitors while on site.

This will include:

- organisation and running of daily surgeries
- management of the immediate care of pupils with mental health conditions
- provision of first aid and emergency care and treatment as necessary
- management of the immediate care of pupils with sports injuries
- provision of a confidential listening and health advice service as appropriate
- following good practice and specific directives on immunization procedures relevant to the School population and individuals
- deliver routine booster and travel vaccination clinics
- operation of procedures for control of infectious diseases
- following procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste
- be aware of and following recommended procedures for safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs
- maintaining treatment room stocks, hygiene and tidiness
- organisation of doctor’s surgeries, including advising pupils to attend and referring to the School’s Medical Officer as appropriate
- arranging for boarding pupils to attend any emergency medical, dental or other health appointments as necessary
- assessment, implementation and evaluation of in-patient care admitted to Hunt Health Centre.

Previous experience in provision of mental health nursing, ideally with adolescents, is not essential but would be a considerable advantage.

Special Working Conditions

The Hunt Health Centre provides 24 hour a day, term time medical support to pupils, through a team of nurses working shifts between them, including the Sister in Charge.

Doctors from The Mill Medical Practice visit for up to 2 hours per day (Monday-Friday). Also present during the day is an office administrator and a health care assistant who provide invaluable support to HHC team and its visitors.

The HHC moved to refurbished 9-bed premises in late Autumn 2009 with bespoke facilities aimed at providing a modern yet comforting environment for pupils.

The hours for this part-time post will include overnight working and one weekend shift in six, term time only. The precise work pattern will be discussed at interview.
