**Overview of a Habilitation Officer**
**The Main Purpose of a Habilitation Officer**:

- To assess risk using and recording the CST Habilitation risk assessment template
- gathering knowledge of the child of young person through liaison and observation. Ensuring that full consent was gained from the parent/ school staff before undertaking anywork with a child or young person and always always undertaking habilitation activities with another adult present.
- To set outcomes, plan, implement and review individual habilitation programmes for Children & Young People with Vision Impairment (including those with complex needs) according to specific needs and capabilities, by giving one to one individual instructionin school, home and community settings.
- To provide training, advice, information and assistance to parents, carers and others in close contact with Children & Young People in order ensure reinforcement of training programmes and to raise their awareness of visual impairment and resources available.
- Ensure the safeguarding policy in Harrow Council, CST and the setting is adhered to.
- Understanding of how to work effectively with children and young people and their parents/guardians to carry out effective Habilitation programmes.
- Knowledge of how to work directly with children and young people and their parents/guardians to carry out effective Habilitation programmes, including low vision training.
- Ideally, at least two years successful experience working in schools and the role of Habilitation worker Or if newly qualified prepared to undertake MISE registration.
- Experience of working with pre-school children
