Houseplant Assistant

**Position: Houseplant Assistant / Indoor Sales Assistant, York**

**Our Garden Centre is a family run business, serving local gardeners for over 50 years, with our York store opening in 1968 and our Scarborough store opening in 1986. We are proud of being a local family firm with strong roots in the local community.**

**Hours of work**

Monday - Saturday
October to February - 9.00am - 5.30pm
March to September - 9.00am - 6.00pm

Sunday
9.00am - 4.30pm / 4.45pm

As the Garden Centre opens late on a Tuesday, the working hours on some Tuesdays will be 11am - 7.30pm

You will be required to work half of the Bank Holidays we are open

**About the Role ?**
- First and foremost, you will be part of a supportive, hardworking team.
- Liaise with the Houseplant Buyer, Indoor Manager and Supervisor.
- Assist in the day-to-day operations of the houseplant area.
- Maintain and water all the indoor plants.
- Assist with baby bedding, kindergarden plants, tomatoes and vegetable plants.
- Identify slow moving stock and action accordingly.
- Maintain plant health and keep an eye out for pests and diseases.
- Collate and send off Phytosanitary reports (in the absence of the Houseplant buyer)
- Follow Plant Health guidelines.
- Provide a friendly and efficient service to all our customers.
- Advise customers and answer their questions on houseplants, bedding plants etc.
- Deal with customer queries over the phone.
- Complete customer orders.
- Receive, check off and price deliveries.
- Replenish and merchandise stock.
- Record, monitor and control all wastage.
- Ensure all Point of Sale is present and correct.
- Use linked sales in displays to maximise sales.
- Work on the Information Desk.
- Use the till, handle cash and complete card transactions using an EPOS till system.
- Carry out cleaning and housekeeping tasks as needed.
- Be vigilant at all times, observing for and reporting anything suspicious.

**About You**
- Have a very good knowledge of all types of houseplants, including flowering, foliage, cacti, succulents and bonsai.
- Have knowledge of tomato and vegetable plants and how to look after them.
- Have knowledge of seedlings, plug plants, basket & bedding plants.
- Be able to work as part of a team and use your own initiative.
- Have a friendly manner and exceptional customer service skills.
- Have retail experience and be able to use an EPOS till.
- Use equipment in a safe, effective and appropriate manner.
- Have a passion for delivering excellent customer service with a smile.
- Have a willingness to learn.
- Be able to work quickly, efficiently and under pressure, in a fast-paced environment.
- Be able to work in a hot and humid environment
- Be physically fit as heavy lifting is required and you will be on your feet all day.
- Be reliable and be flexible with working hours and duties.
- Be aware of Health and Safety matters and keep up to date with legislation and be prepared to undertake training that may be necessary due to new legislation.
- Have a right first-time approach and can-do attitude.
