We are seeking a full-time Coordinator of French to join the management team for Languages in the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication (CLCC) at Imperial College, London.
An experienced teacher of French, you will join an established team of language coordinators and will lead the French teaching team. You will have overall responsibility for the management of French teaching provision, ensuring there is adequate professional teaching resource to meet all service requirements. The Language Coordinator is part of the team which offers a high-quality language teaching service to students and identifies, recommends, and implements improvements and innovative proposals in the Languages Section of the CLCC.
Imperial is committed to providing an educational experience that empowers graduates to be leaders in their chosen careers and contribute meaningfully to society. In the academic year 2012-13, the College successfully introduced the Imperial Horizons programme for undergraduate students which, in 2020, became embedded within the curriculum as part of students’ degree programmes. The programme aims to put science in the context of the wider world and to develop interdisciplinary approaches to learning and thinking. This programme includes a range of modules in the fields of Languages, the Humanities and Social Sciences.
**Duties and responsibilities**:
- Maintain and develop the virtual learning environment for the language, providing guidance across the language team and leading the creation of material, to ensure the VLE’s capabilities are fully maximised to support teaching delivery and assessment, and consistency across coursework, assessment, examinations, and generic resources.
- Undertake teaching using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods including digital learning technologies.
- Set and standardise examinations and assessment procedures in the relevant language, together with the management of the examination processes.
- Assess the work (including examinations and coursework) and progress of students using appropriate methods and criteria.
- Provide constructive and actionable feedback on course assessments within College’s regulations and ensure results are recorded in pertinent online systems.
- Source, nominate and liaise with the External Examiner, including preparation of assessment samples in line with College regulations. Line-manage and co-ordinate the work of all part-time teachers of the relevant language to deliver a quality service. Including, where appropriate, leading team meetings, performance management of staff, recruitment and selection of staff, and staff development.Represent and advocate for the French team at internal meetings as required and attend College open days and events as necessary.
- Maintain and foster the development of contacts and collaborations with comparable Language Departments, Centres, and other external bodies.
**Essential requirements**:
- A degree or equivalent qualification in French
- Relevant postgraduate qualifications and specific professional qualifications
- Extensive experience of teaching French at university level and of administrative management duties.
- Proven experience of material and course design and planning including syllabi and assessment for the whole range of language levels (A1 to C1/C2) in different academic environments.
- Demonstrable familiarity with a variety of student-centred strategies to promote and assess learning.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365
- Well-developed knowledge of the higher education sector and current developments in institution-wide language programmes.
- Native or near-native speaker of French
- Substantial experience of ICT and e-learning tools for learning/teaching and administration and a willingness to engage with e-learning tools and to keep up to date with the latest learning technology.
- Ability to work flexibly, both independently and as part of a team in an open-minded and cooperative manner to manage and successfully deliver agreed outcomes.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to negotiate, motivate, influence, and build relationships with colleagues and students to achieve positive outcomes.
- Demonstrable ability to take initiative, prioritise efficiently and work autonomously, sometimes under pressure.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation and good attention to detail.
