Locum Consultant Dermatology

A 10 session Locum Consultant Dermatologist post is offered based at Wrexham District General Hospital.

GENERAL INFORMATION (WREXHAM MAELOR HOSPITAL)

Wrexham Maelor District General Hospital is the District General Hospital for the east area of North Wales. The Dermatology department provides a service for Wrexham and it surrounding villages. It also provides services to Bala and Dolgellau areas and English border villages and towns. The hospital itself is situated within the busy market town of Wrexham.

HOSPITAL ACCOMMODATION

The department has good offices for doctors, nurses and secretaries, including a very useful seminar room, and a clinic room. Most of our clinics are held in the main outpatient department. We have a dedicated skin biopsy room, and phototherapy unit. We have the use of a Medical day unit, for outpatient infusions and acute bed availability on Mason Ward.

Clinics are also held by departmental staff at Deeside Community Hospital, Mold Cottage Hospital, Chirk Cottage Hospital and Dolgellau Cottage Hospital, which all have extremely good facilities and friendly staff.

The new consultant will have a designated office.

T his post is in addition to the 4 full time Consultants in the department, Dr Rob Lister, Dr P Balasubramaniam, Dr Dalia Alsaadi and Dr Paul Yesudian. The consultants are supported by 2 specialist registrars, a full time associate specialist, and 4 speciality doctors 1.7 WTE and 0.5 WHT SHO. There are 5 specialist nurses. T

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is the largest health board in Wales covering the whole of North Wales. It manages both acute and community services via its three divisions namely West, Centre and East. Dermatology is managed in the area division (a mixture of community and some acute based services) with the base for dermatology remaining in the acute sector at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. All the major specialities and sub-specialities are represented at Wrexham Maelor Hospital with the exception of cardiac surgery and neurosurgery. Visiting Consultants provide for plastic surgery, neurology and tertiary level specialist paediatrics. The dermatology department has excellent relationships with the oral and maxillofacial department who provide the head and neck plastic surgery services in North Wales. The clinical specialities are supported by excellent pathology and radiology services with CT and MRI on site. The pathology department includes a consultant histopathologist with a special interest in dermatopathology.

Wrexham is a very successful town situated on the Welsh/ English border and is surrounded by beautiful North Wales and West Cheshire countryside. The town has excellent links to the North West with Liverpool and Manchester both only 45 minutes by car. Manchester International Airport is only 50 minutes away and Chester to Euston London is only a 2 hour journey.

House prices in the region are reasonable compared with the national average and there is a good choice of excellent state and private schools within the area.

JOB PLAN
- 5 Direct Clinical Contact sessions - it is envisaged that this will consist of approximately 5 sessions of clinics/cutaneous surgery/ward rounds and referrals and approximately 2 sessions of direct patient related administration.
- 5 Supporting Professional Activities sessions. One of these sessions will be to support the department in defined roles to complement the current consultants’ roles. This may include clinical governance lead, and deputy lead for local and specialist skin cancer MDTs.
- There is no out of hours on call commitment associated with these posts.
- Each year the department sees approximately 6000 new patients and 12,000 review patients. The successful applicant will be required to contribute to the workload of the department in line with recommendations of the British Association of Dermatologists which specify 10 to 16 patients per clinic depending on mix of new to review patients. A significant contribution to the general dermatology services will be expected but opportunities to pursue a specialist interest of relevance to the overall service will be encouraged.
