Clerk to Governors
The Clerk to the Governors will support the Board of Governors by providing efficient and high quality administration and recording of Board Meeting and other Governors’ Committee meetings.
Accountable to the Governors and in particular to the Chairman of Governors, the Clerk’s role is critical to the effective working of the Board.
The role will require attendance at four Board Meetings each year, as well as around twelve other Committee meetings and an annual Strategy Day. Board Meetings occur at 5.30pm on a Monday and may last two or more hours. Sub Committee meetings may be at a similar time though some occur during the school day, this may change with each group to suit the schedule of the participants.
The annual Strategy Day occurs on a Saturday, usually in May each year.
The vacancy has occurred through the retirement of a long serving Clerk, who has overseen a progressive increase in the professional running of Board business. The Chairman of Governors is keen to continue this positive progress and to ensure that the Board remains effective. The Clerk will build constructive relationships with the Head, the Bursar and other key members of the school staff as required.
Nonetheless, the accountability is to the Governors and not to the executive leadership of the school, an essential feature of this role which thereby supports the Governors in their oversight of the School.
The Woodard Corporation appoints Governors to Queen Mary’s School and the Clerk to the Governors oversees the process by which governors are appointed, as well as managing any departures from the Board.
The relationship with the Woodard Corporation is another important interface to be managed.
The role of the clerk is part-time and has in the past been managed as an independent contractual relationship instead of a contract of employment.
All options may be considered depending upon the circumstances of the applicant.
Queen Mary’s is well-placed to build a strong programme of future investments that will set the School on a firm footing for the very long term.
This appointment will be overseen by the Chairman of Governors.
