**About the Job**

A Senior SQL DBA Engineer builds, administers, transitions, supports and maintains the SQL server infrastructure throughout the service lifecycle, according to the departmental policy and Home Office strategy.

You will be required to participate in an on-call rota. This may require you to occasionally work out of hours to implement certain technical changes.

This role may also involve some travel to other Home Office sites.

**Responsibilities**
- Work with teams and departments in the implementation, administration and support of SQL infrastructure solutions and services.
- Reviewing systems designs to ensure selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources, integration of multiple systems and technology and that 'Secure by Design' principles have been followed.
- Managing planning of system and/or acceptance tests, coordinating both functional and non-functional specifications and provide authoritative advice and guidance on test planning.
- Troubleshooting and identifying problems across different technology capabilities including compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, cloud, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open source.
- Establishing standards and procedures across a service lifecycle including the development lifecycle and ensure that practitioners adhere to this. You will manage resources to ensure that the systems integration function works effectively.
- After a solution has been integrated, evaluating the success of the project, identifying best practices and lessons learned. You will provide feedback to teams and incorporate this information into future plans.
- Managing, coaching, and mentoring more junior infrastructure engineers. Whilst helping to shape engineering best practises and standards.
- Ensuring the creation and updating of technical documentation.

**Primary Responsibilities**
- As part of a team, day-to-day management of existing relational databases (primarily MS SQL) and design & implementation of improvements. Ensure integration with existing tooling (SCOM, SCCM).
- Ensuring business continuity by developing and implementing highly available database systems, disaster recovery and database backup and recovery plans and procedures, both on-premises and in the Cloud.
- Defining performance baselines and monitoring deviations from them when monitoring the relational database estate and ensure it is maintained in a healthy state.
- Work will be a mixture of project-initiated design & build, business-as-usual process improvement and support. In addition to the primary responsibilities listed here, there is virtually unlimited opportunity to get involved in many aspects of work relatedto enterprise infrastructure both on-premises and in the cloud.

**Essential Skills**

You will have a proven passion for Infrastructure Engineering, with the following demonstrable skills or strong experience in:

- Knowledge of DBMS fundamental principles.
- Technical expert in Windows SQL server administration, configuration, and troubleshooting, using associated tooling.
- Experience deploying SQL and setting it up for snapshotting, performance tuning, backup, availability, upgrades, patching & indexing
- Strong SQL scripting skills (implementing automated maintenance jobs, etc).
- Strong knowledge of SQL administration and security protocols for client/server environments deployed using Cloud solutions (AWS & Azure) on Windows platforms.
- Experience with database activities including capacity planning and security.
- Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with other teams in order to understand requirements and provide guidance on SQL Server.
- Ability to produce and maintain accurate documentation and operational reports.
