We are looking to appoint a dynamic and forward-thinking Consultant in Stroke Medicine to join our Stroke Services Team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
This is an exciting time to be joining us as we are in the last stages of becoming a Comprehensive Stroke Centre. We provide an active acute thrombolysis service supported by telestroke out of hours, and we are also the neuro-interventional centre for the region providing neuro-interventional thrombectomy procedures for patients.
This post supports continued development of the stroke service, you will work alongside two existing Stroke Consultants as well as 3 Nurse consultants along with a team of specialist stroke nurses, therapists, stroke advanced nurse practitioners, matrons, ward managers and the wider team to provide excellent care to our patients at all stages of their hospital journey.
You will be involved in the delivery of acute stroke and rehabilitative stroke care. You will contribute to providing a high-quality TIA service (with dedicated MRI and Carotid Doppler provision), outpatient clinic as well as be part of our new Ambulatory Stroke Pathway. There will be an opportunity for you to join the regional telestroke service for out of hours thrombolysis support.
As a part of the Medical Directorate at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Stroke Medicine is provided at both Hospital sites (Royal Preston Hospital (RPH) and Chorley & South Ribble Hospital (CDH) which serves a local population of 390,000).This proactive service consists of Hyper acute and Acute stroke services at RPH as well as an emergency TIA service and stroke rehabilitation at CDH.
The Stroke Medicine service is closely integrated with the Neurosciences Directorate, which provides regional neurosciences for a population of 1.5 million residents in Lancashire and South Cumbria. Services within this include:
- Regional Neuroscience led Stroke Interventional Service with provision of Vascular Neurology
- Neurosurgery, Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology
- Neuro-critical Care and Neuro-rehabilitation
**The post holder will**:
- Provide direct input into the care of stroke/TIA (including thrombolysis) and medical patients on Ward 21, Emergency TIA clinic (4 new patients only) and stroke follow up clinics (2 New and 10 follow up Patients) based at Royal Preston Hospital. Will be responsible for looking after the 24 bedded stroke unit along with two other colleagues with cross cover arrangement.
- Participate in an out of hour’s regional Tele-stroke Thrombolysis rota. The Regional Tele-stroke Thrombolysis rota covers six trusts in the Lancashire and Cumbria region. The Consultants on the rota are connected at home to the six trusts via a separate secure high speed broadband connection. Consultations with the hospitals and patients are provided via this link. There is a 24/7 technical support for this service. The Tele-stroke cover is on a one in 16 weekday and one in 16 weekend rota. Training will be provided for medical staff participating in Thrombolysis via telemedicine.
- Participate in an acute unselected general medical weekday/weekend on call at Royal Preston Hospital. This will be on a 1 in 24 on call on a rolling rota. The on call Consultant will do a ward round in the evening and will provide advice via telephone after 9 pm overnight. The Acute Medical Consultants provide cover for the Medical Assessment Unit during the day. General/Acute medicine certification is essential.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary teams and lead the co-ordination of patient care. Adequate time will be provided for MDT meetings.
- Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off-duty periods.
