The Team

Now the largest shipping practice in the world, Clyde & Co has specialist marine lawyers based in trading hubs around the globe.

We act for the heart of the maritime industry - insurers, shipbuilders, owners, charterers, salvors, financiers, port authorities and government - and clients across the broader trade commodities and energy sector.

We act in a wide range of claims arising from the damage/loss of cargo in transit, whether it involves carriage by sea, air, rail or road. Our services also extend to logistics, yachts, marine trades, warehousing, ports and terminals.

The Role

We are currently seeking a Senior Associate Solicitor to join our cargo and marine insurance practice in our London office.

Previous experience within the marine insurance and/or shipping sector is desirable, but not essential. We will consider experienced solicitors with a strong commercial litigation background and a passion to move into this specialist area of work.

The successful candidates will display excellent legal ability and initiative, as well as confidence in managing and prioritising a full and varied caseload. The role will best suit a strong communicator with attention to detail.

Essential Skills & Experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Running a case load of files in a manner compliant with our service level agreements with insurers.
  • Acting in both a claimant and defendant capacity in a variety of complex claims.
  • Reporting to, liaising with and meeting clients with a high level of professionalism.
  • Preparing instructions to counsel and experts and attending and advising in conference.
  • Conducting research and keeping up to date with legal and industry practices.

Experience and Skills Required

  • Previous experience within the marine insurance and/or shipping sector is desirable, but not essential. We will also consider candidates from a commercial litigation background.
  • Completed the LPC or equivalent.
  • An undergraduate law degree or equivalent.
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • The ability to meet deadlines and work efficiently by managing time in a fast-paced environment.
  • A professional manner with the ability to build relationships internally and externally.
  • Assertive and confident at managing expectations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Negotiation skills
