The Role

We're seeking a qualified and motivated Accredited Clinical Coder (Band 5) to join the Clinical Coding Team at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

You'll be responsible for accurately translating inpatient clinical information into ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes, ensuring compliance with NHS Digital and World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.

This role is essential to ensuring accurate data collection, income recovery, clinical governance, and research across the Trust.

Key Responsibilities

  • Extract and analyse patient records to assign accurate clinical codes for diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensure coding accuracy (90%+) and productivity (minimum 4 FCEs per hour) for all inpatient activity.
  • Liaise with clinicians and operational teams to clarify complex or new procedures.
  • Maintain coding data accuracy within the Patient Administration System.
  • Mentor and support trainee coders; contribute to internal audits and quality reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with national coding standards, confidentiality, and Information Governance.
  • Participate in refresher and standards training to maintain accreditation.
  • Manage own workload autonomously to meet monthly reporting deadlines.

About You

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC) — mandatory.
  • Degree or equivalent experience in clinical coding within an acute NHS setting.
  • Completion of mandatory clinical coding refresher/standards training.
  • Proven experience coding inpatient activity across multiple specialties.
  • Proficient knowledge of ICD-10 and OPCS-4 coding classifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation, and communication skills.
  • Strong IT literacy, including use of Microsoft applications.

Desirable:

  • Experience mentoring trainee coders.
  • Understanding of the impact of coding on Trust income and clinical governance.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development.
