Learning Resource Volunteer

Create simple, self-explanatory English and maths worksheets for Ethiopian pupils (Grades 1–6) receiving hospital care. Using provided textbooks, design or find engaging A4 sheets for printing and laminating. Flexible remote role, a few hours a week for 2–3 months.
What difference will you make?
At Ethiopian Hospital Schools, our mission is to ensure that children receiving long-term medical treatment can continue learning, growing, and feeling connected to their education. Many of our pupils are undergoing cancer treatment and spend months in hospital, far from their classrooms and friends. For these children, learning provides not just knowledge, but comfort, normality, and hope for the future.
Our teachers work directly in hospital wards, supporting pupils at their bedsides or in small classroom areas. However, they often have limited access to ready-made materials that are suitable for the pupils' varying abilities and energy levels. The volunteer worksheets you create will directly fill this gap — giving teachers and children the tools they need to learn in a way that is meaningful, independent, and adaptable.
By developing simple, engaging worksheets in English and maths, you will help us build a sustainable library of resources that can be used again and again. Each laminated worksheet will enable pupils to copy, practise, and learn at their own pace, even on days when they are too tired to participate fully in a lesson. This makes education more accessible and consistent, no matter how a child is feeling.
Your work will also have a wider impact on our teachers and volunteers. With more structured and progressive materials at hand, teachers can focus on giving personal support rather than spending valuable time searching for or creating new resources. This allows them to reach more children each day and to deliver lessons that feel purposeful and joyful, even in challenging hospital environments.
In the long term, this project helps Ethiopian Hospital Schools move closer to our vision that every hospitalised child in Ethiopia has the opportunity to learn and feel valued through education. Your contribution will strengthen the quality of what we can offer, ensuring that our programmes remain creative, relevant, and sustainable.
Most importantly, this role helps children maintain their confidence and sense of identity as learners. Even while facing illness, they can continue to make progress, see their achievements, and stay connected to their dreams. By joining us in this volunteer role, you'll be part of something deeply human — bringing learning, dignity, and hope to children when they need it most.
What are we looking for?
We're looking for a volunteer who is creative, organised, and passionate about helping children learn — especially those facing difficult circumstances. You don't need to be a qualified teacher to take part, but an interest in education and an understanding of how children learn will be a great advantage.
The ideal volunteer will be able to find or create engaging, self-explanatory worksheets that are suitable for children in Grades 1–6. Experience in teaching, tutoring, or developing educational materials is essential, but what matters most is your ability to think practically and empathetically about what pupils might enjoy and understand.
Because the worksheets are for children whose first language is not English, we're looking for someone who can design or select resources that use clear visuals, simple language, and minimal written instructions. You should have a good eye for presentation and an awareness of how to make tasks appealing and easy to follow for a wide range of learners.
You'll also need to be comfortable working independently. This is a remote, flexible role, so being able to manage your own time, communicate clearly with our small team, and meet agreed deadlines will be important. Basic computer skills, such as downloading, editing, or formatting documents, are all that's required.
If you care about education, creativity, and giving back in a meaningful way, this is a role where your skills can have a direct and lasting impact.
What will you be doing?
Ethiopian Hospital Schools provides educational support to children receiving long-term hospital care. Many of our pupils are undergoing cancer treatment, and while they may not always feel well enough to attend regular school, they are eager to continue learning. Our hospital teachers work hard to provide consistent education, but resources are limited. This volunteer role will help us create a bank of high-quality, easy-to-use learning materials that will make a lasting difference for these pupils.
We are looking for a volunteer to source or create engaging, self-explanatory worksheets for pupils in Grades 1–6. These will be printed, laminated, and used in hospital classrooms and at bedsides, allowing pupils to work independently or with light guidance from teachers. The worksheets should be clear, visual, and accessible for Ethiopian learners, using limited written instructions and focusing on simple, step-by-step tasks that children can complete in their exercise books.
The main priorities of this role are
- Creating or finding suitable worksheets in English and maths, aligned with the Ethiopian school curriculum (we will provide the textbooks and grade-level guidance).
- Organising materials by subject and grade level, ensuring they are progressive so that pupils can build confidence and skills over time.
- Ensuring accessibility, with clear examples, minimal text, and visual cues so pupils can work with limited explanation.
- Submitting completed worksheets electronically to the charity team for printing and laminating.
You don't need to design everything from scratch — adapting or compiling existing open educational resources is absolutely fine, as long as they are appropriate for our pupils and easy to follow. We will guide you on the style, tone, and format we use in the hospital classrooms.
This role is remote and flexible, requiring just a few hours each week for around two to three months. The goal is to develop a core collection of worksheets in both maths and English, covering a range of abilities within Grades 1–6. However, if you wish to contribute for a shorter or longer period, we are happy to adjust — every contribution helps.
You will be supported by our small, friendly team of educators and volunteers who work together to make learning possible for children facing long hospital stays. We will provide regular check-ins, feedback, and all the reference materials you need.
Your work will have a direct and meaningful impact. These laminated worksheets will be used daily by teachers in Ethiopian hospitals, giving pupils access to structured, stimulating lessons even when they are too unwell to attend regular school. By helping to build this library of resources, you'll be helping children maintain their education, confidence, and connection to learning during one of the most difficult times in their lives.
