Head of Materials

GTS Transportation is working with a major UK rail freight operator to recruit an experienced
Head of Materials
. This senior role offers the opportunity to lead and develop materials operations across multiple engineering depots, ensuring the smooth and efficient supply of parts and resources to support critical maintenance activity.

The Role

You'll take ownership of the end-to-end materials management process, overseeing supply, inventory, and procurement performance across several key sites. The successful candidate will drive continuous improvement, strengthen supplier relationships, and ensure all materials operations meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead materials management across multiple depots, ensuring consistent processes and standards.
  • Manage inventory accuracy, stock levels, and supplier performance.
  • Identify and resolve supply chain issues, improving material flow and delivery.
  • Develop performance metrics and reporting to support operational goals.
  • Foster a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

About You

We're seeking a strong leader with hands-on experience in materials, logistics, or supply chain management
within the rail industry
. You'll be confident managing complex operations, skilled in process optimisation, and able to build strong relationships across technical and operational teams.

Essential Requirements:

  • Proven experience in materials or supply chain management.
  • Rail industry experience is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of procurement, forecasting, and inventory systems.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
