Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral research position in the Condensed Matter Theory group of the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham, to be supervised by Dr Adam Gammon-Smith. The successful candidate will be working on the ERC Starting Grant project QUADCOMB "Towards a practical quantum advantage: Confronting the quantum many-body problem using quantum computers"(under the UKRI Guarantee scheme).
Topics include:
- Quantum many-body dynamics
- Quantum algorithms
- Quantum-enhanced numerical methods
- Quantum machine learning
- Tensor Networks
- Topological order
This is a full time hours) post offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 24 months. The latest start of date for this would be 01 September 2026. There is potential for extension, subject to funding.
The main responsibility of the role is to carry out theoretical and/or computational research in quantum condensed matter theory and quantum computation, broadly understood. The successful candidate(s) will also be expected to communicate the outcomes of the research in the form of publications and seminars. They will be an integral part of a team of researchers covering a broad range of theoretical areas including statistical physics, condensed matter theory, computational physics, quantum information, and machine learning. We seek motivated, skilled and highly independent researchers to complement our team.
Candidates should have a doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) in physics or mathematics, or be very close to completion. A strong research record in theoretical condensed matter physics, quantum computing, or a closely related field is essential.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Adam Gammon-Smith Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
As part of our commitment to improving equality, diversity, and inclusion within the school, shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to talk to a member of staff representing women, racially minoritized people, LGBTQIA+, or disabilities communities. This will be separate from the assessment process and will play no role in the decision to appoint.
