As a
Full Time Band 6 Specialist Hand Therapist
, you will deliver
patient-centred care across the full spectrum
of wrist and hand conditions, including trauma, elective surgical recovery, and non-surgical referrals.

Main duties of the job
The Post Holder Will

  • Prioritise, plan and deliver clinical case work in the specialist rehabilitation and management of complex wrist and hand problem
  • Coordinate and manage all patients with wrist and hand problems.
  • Provide evidence based, highly specialist knowledge and skills to the specialist MSK & hand therapy service.
  • P rovide a key role in partnership collaborating with patients, carers, the MDT, and wider statutory, private, and voluntary sector services.
  • Work closely with orthopaedics, medical, AHP and nursing colleagues to ensure high quality patient care.
  • Be prepared to work flexibly in terms of time and workload to meet service needs.
  • Be professionally accountable but will have access to clinical supervision from a senior clinical practitioner.
  • To continually develop and modernise the physiotherapy provision to patients with complex wrist and hand problems under the care of Airedale NHSFT.
  • To take responsibility for staff and student training/development.
  • Provide support to operational and service managers deputizing for them as required.

  • Managing a complex clinical caseload using expert assessment and treatment strategies
  • Collaborating closely with orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeons on integrated pathways for splinting, wound care, and rehabilitation
  • Providing timely triage and early intervention for post operative, emergency department referrals & urgent conditions to prevent complications
  • Managing chronic hand/wrist conditions referred by primary care and supporting MSK/FCP colleagues
  • Support on service outcomes, staff development, student training, and coordination of rotations

Qualifications
Essential criteria

  • Degree or equivalent pre-registration award in physiotherapy.
  • State registrations with the Health Care Professions Council

Desirable criteria

  • Recent post graduate courses relevant to hand therapy, for example BAHT level 1
  • MSc modules in a relevant area of practice.
  • Leadership courses.
  • Member of relevant Professional special interest groups/organisations: BAHT
  • Completion of course in Professional Practice education.

Experience
Essential criteria

  • Experience of assessing and treating wrist and hand conditions.
  • Experience in thermoplastic splinting for wrist and hand conditions/ Experience in using a variety of off the shelfs splints for wrist and hand conditions
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working and working collaboratively with other.
  • Experience of clinical supervision both as supervisee and supervisor.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working at band 6 level in occupational or physiotherapy.
  • Experience of undertaking hand therapy assessments and treatment
  • Experience in wound management.
  • Experience of service improvement projects and audit.

Knowledge
Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge and clinical reasoning skills to support advanced clinical practice in hand therapy
  • Knowledge of the roles of other professionals and the principles of partnership working.
  • Knowledge of clinical standards and ability to implement and audit these in the team and Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance.
  • Knowledge to promote and support equality and value diversity and Knowledge of the NHS constitution.

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of relevant national and local legislation relevant hand therapy
  • Knowledge of wound management.
  • Specialist knowledge and clinical reasoning skills to support expert clinical practice.

Skills
Essential criteria

  • The ability to select and apply a wide variety of assessment tools and treatment modalities to the wrist and hand including thermoplastic splinting.
  • Ability to work well within a team and show excellent communication and counselling skills including observation, listening and empathy
