£55,516 - £68,000 (depending on experience)

About LPSD
Caterpillar Large Power Systems Division (LPSD) designs and manufactures diesel and spark-ignited engines, ranging from 400 kilowatts to 16 megawatts of power, as well as the key engine systems such as fuel, air, aftertreatment, and cooling which are used to power Oil & Gas, Electric Power, Marine, Rail, Industrial, and CAT Machine applications around the world.

What You Will Do
As a Senior Engineer, you will be leading key engineering activity whilst working with our global development partners across Engine Development, Systems, Research, Component and Electronics teams and at times will be required to report directly into our product groups.

Engine Calibration & Performance Development

  • Lead performance and emissions calibration for large diesel engines.
  • Drive the development and implementation of calibration processes for 4000/5000 Diesel product MGPP, including model-based control and calibration strategies.
  • Serve as the Process Owner for L4 Performance Systems Processes.

Process Improvement & Integration

  • Lead initiatives to define and optimize end-to-end calibration processes.
  • Identify and implement improvements in data analysis and measurement capabilities for L4 Development and GED teams.
  • Evaluate and integrate L4 to L5 system interactions, including feed-forward control and interface enhancements.

Testing, Analysis & Defect Resolution

  • Manage and execute test plans, data analysis, and failure investigations using industry-standard methods.
  • Establish and maintain L4 performance tracking databases.
  • Support root cause analysis and resolution of technical issues.

Cross-Functional Engineering Support

  • Collaborate with design teams through FMEAs, VDRAs, and Design Reviews.
  • Demonstrate product capability against technical and product objectives, identifying and mitigating technical risks.
  • Coordinate daily engineering activities and ensure alignment with project goals.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations through reports, reviews, and presentations.
  • Work across global teams to promote knowledge sharing and ensure alignment with world-class product development standards.

What You Will Have
Technical Excellence:
Level - Extensive Experience:

  • Experience in product development of diesel engines and new technology
  • Engine calibration and/or software development,
  • Engine testing for performance and emissions capability
  • Experience in engine control strategy development and implementation

Product Testing:
Level - Extensive Experience:

  • Hands on engine testing and strong knowledge of problem-solving quality tools and risk mitigation tools (APQP, DFMEA etc.)

Troubleshooting Technical Problems
: Level - Extensive Experience:

  • Experience in the use of data analysis tools, testbed software, emissions measuring equipment and data logging systems

Accuracy and Attention to Detail:
Level - Extensive Experience:

Analytical Thinking
: Level - Extensive Experience:

  • Excellent problem solver and demonstrated experience in delivering complex engine development programmes
  • Demonstrated experience of industry standard methodologies used for root cause corrective action (RCCA). E.g. DMAIC, 8D, TRIZ

Decision Making and Critical Thinking
: Level - Extensive Experience:

  • Demonstrated decision making skills comparing the impact of design alternatives against technical or product objectives

Effective Communications:
Level - Extensive Experience:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills (coaching, communication, teamwork) to build effective relationships

Top Candidates Will Have

  • Experience of Electrically controlled Unit Injection fuel systems and relevant control strategies
  • Diesel engine performance simulation
  • Project Management methods and processes - Capable of interrogating larger programme control plans and ensuring delivery to broader requirements
  • Strategic and innovative thinker

Additional Information

  • This role is based at the Stafford facility 5 days per week
