Job Title: Teaching Assistant Apprentice (ESOL)

Department: ESOL

Salary: £22,283 per year

Job Type: Full-time, fixed term contract (35 hours per week)

The role:

As a teaching assistant apprentice for ESOL, your primary responsibility will be to support the teaching staff in creating effective and stimulating learning opportunities for all students. You will work closely with students to support them in achieving their academic and personal goals.

You will help to supervise and motivate students, working closely with individuals or small groups at pre-entry and entry levels to provide additional support. You may also be required to assist with classroom management, including maintaining

Key Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

  • Support the curriculum area strategic objectives, actively engaging in the annual review process.
  • Stay up-to-date with national developments in the subject area and update knowledge and skills on an annual basis.
  • Assist teaching staff in planning and preparing high-quality lessons, providing support in the delivery of learning materials.
  • Use a range of effective and appropriate teaching and learning techniques to engage and motivate students, encouraging independence and student autonomy.
  • Help to establish a purposeful and motivating learning environment where students feel safe, secure, confident and valued.
  • Establish and maintain procedures with students that promote and maintain appropriate behaviour, communication, and respect for others, while challenging discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.
  • Support the marking and recording of student work in accordance with College and School Assessment policies.
  • Monitor and record student progress and attendance in accordance with agreed College systems and policies.
  • Provide support to the teaching staff in the use of appropriate teaching styles and learning experiences.
  • Be aware of external/internal assessment procedures and play an appropriate part in their implementation.
  • Communicate and consult with parents, carers, and students, including Parent's Evening, Welcome Evenings, events, and open evenings.
  • Ensure that all students in the subject area comply with College's policies and procedures.
  • Assist in providing enrichment opportunities that are exciting, motivating and enhance the student experience.
  • Provide support to learners with a well-prepared VLE and resources for independent study.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of the different needs of learners and effective strategies to ensure all learners make progress.

Generic duties:

  • To contribute fully to the mission and values statement of the College Group ensuring its effective implementation in all aspects of College life.
  • To take proactive responsibility for Health & Safety to ensure that a safe working environment and safe working practices are maintained at all times.
  • To comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
  • To support cross college activities as required, such as organizing events or assisting with enrolment.
  • To understand roles and responsibilities around safeguarding all learners and contribute to maintaining a safe learning environment.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria:

  1. Excellent computer literacy – ability to use the current IT programs of the College

  2. Knowledge and understanding of GCSE Qualifications.

  3. Engaged and passionate about Continuing Professional Development.

  4. Minimum of Level 2 Maths and English Qualification.

  5. High level of communication and interpersonal skills, an effective member of a team.

  6. Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and for themselves.

  7. Strong understanding of the importance and impact of feedback on learner performance.

  8. Experience using ICT to support and enhance subject delivery.

Desirable Criteria:

  1. Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and for themselves.

  4. Experience and understanding of ALPS and value added as progress measures.

  7. Fluent speaking in any of the mentioned languages: Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Kurdish Sorani, Tigrinya, Spanish, French or Portuguese.

  8. Ability to demonstrate patience, empathy and compassion when working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
