Role Overview

We're looking for an experienced and hands-on Picture Framing Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day running of our busy framing gallery. This role is ideal for a skilled framer who enjoys both craftsmanship and leadership — someone who can manage workflow, maintain quality standards, and support a small team while also contributing to production.

You'll work closely with the company directors to ensure projects are completed efficiently, to specification, and to the high standards for which Portobello Frames is known.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily/weekly workshop operations, ensuring smooth workflow and even distribution of jobs among framers.
  • Maintain quality control — inspecting materials, craftsmanship, and finished frames before client delivery.
  • Lead by example through hands-on production: jumping in where needed to ensure the weeks projects are all finished.
  • Train and mentor junior framers and shop assistants in techniques, safety procedures, and customer service.
  • Liaise with clients, providing expert advice on materials, finishes, and conservation options.
  • Manage inventory and materials, placing orders for mouldings, mounts, glass, and hardware as needed.
  • Coordinate schedules and deadlines, ensuring all bespoke and readymade orders are completed on time.
  • Maintain workshop standards of cleanliness, organisation, and health & safety compliance.
  • Collaborate with management on improving production processes, pricing, and customer experience.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in bespoke picture framing, with a strong portfolio of craftsmanship.
  • Previous supervisory or lead framer experience in a workshop environment.
  • Deep understanding of materials, conservation methods, and finishing techniques.
  • Ability to manage a small team effectively while maintaining your own workflow.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication and client-facing skills.
  • Confident using both hand tools and framing machinery safely.
  • A proactive, calm, and supportive leadership style.
  • Computer literacy.
