Remote, United Kingdom The Learning Circle Full time

JOB TITLE: Maths Teacher

RESPONSIBLE TO: Anil Sarna, Director

CONTEXT:

The Learning Circle is an online learning community of around 90 children and 10 adults. Most of the children are home-educated, although some flexi-school. The children decide how many days per week they learn with us. The community decides together what to study and how to be together as a community. Many of these decisions are taken in the weekly democratic meetings, but they're also taken in the classroom too. Each member of the community, whether a child or an adult, has one vote when decisions are being made.

We learn through topic-based learning, with some exceptions such as maths. When a topic has been chosen by the democratic meeting, the teachers then get together to plan the curriculum in a joined-up way. We are also open to the topic unfolding as the term progresses and to the learning going is unexpected directions as it follows the children's interests.

There is something truly wonderful and inspiring about working with young people in this way, being part of a learning community. We get to observe them, get to know them, and have the enormous privilege of being able to help them learn and grow into the person they are meant to be. Their personalities reveal themselves: and the kind of human being we can trust to be stewards of our planet emerges: passionate about the world, committed to knowledge as a human endeavour, deeply respectful of themselves and each other.

Before children start studying for their GCSEs, we do not carry out any formal assessments and any homework is optional, although we do offer feedback when children ask for it. However, we understand that part of preparation for GCSE exams includes looking at past-papers and some home work outside of class. This can be agreed democratically with the group and with individual students.

If you are passionate about teaching and learning, and equally passionate about young people, if you want the ceiling to be taken off what can be done with young people within your discipline, come and join us. Teaching is a vocation: and this is an invitation to enter into that vocation, to be part of a project that will move you, and change you deeply, and for all the right reasons.
