Mid/Senior Ruby Engineer

Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom CareScribe Full time £45,000 - £75,000 per year

At CareScribe, we design cutting-edge technology that helps people work smarter, communicate better, and create more inclusive environments. What began as a mission to make workplaces and education more accessible has evolved into building tools that help people all over the world focus, stay productive, and feel connected.

Our products, Caption.Ed and TalkType, are used by many educators, professionals, and businesses to reduce meeting fatigue, improve communication, and make everyday interactions more inclusive.

Behind the scenes, our backend team builds the reliable, scalable, and accessible technology that makes this possible. We're now looking for a Ruby Engineer to help continue this work and keep our products performing at their best.

Where you come in

As a Ruby Backend Engineer, you'll play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining the backend systems that power our products. You'll be involved across the full development lifecycle - from shaping technical design to building, testing and optimising performance.

You'll collaborate closely with Product, Design, QA, and fellow engineers, shaping solutions that are robust, maintainable, and accessible. You'll be joining a small, collaborative team -  two leads and two juniors - where you can make a real impact, contribute your ideas, and help others develop their skills as you build technology that supports focus, productivity, and inclusion.

What you'll be doing

  • Develop, test, and deploy backend features that deliver value to users and align with product goals
  • Maintain high standards of code quality, performance, and reliability across our backend systems.
  • Contribute to backend architecture, frameworks, and workflows to ensure scalable, maintainable systems.
  • Participate in code reviews, giving constructive feedback and sharing knowledge with your peers.
  • Identify and help resolve technical challenges, ensuring smooth delivery of features.
  • Research and implement new tools, frameworks, and best practices to continuously improve our backend development.
  • Collaborate with the team to define and prioritise technical and non-functional requirements.
  • Support the growth of other engineers by mentoring and sharing your experience (more relevant for senior candidates).

About you

We're looking for someone with a strong track record in backend development who thrives in a collaborative, product-led, and fast-paced environment. You don't need a fixed number of years of experience, we care more about what you've done and the impact you've made.

  • Experienced with Ruby and Ruby on Rails, building reliable backend systems.
  • Comfortable with databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and writing efficient, reliable queries.
  • Confident using command-line tooling and shell, troubleshooting issues and debugging complex backend problems
  • Experienced with Git, GitHub, and CI/CD pipelines for version control and deployment.
  • Strong problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills.
  • Able to own your work, deliver maintainable code and contribute to team best practices.
  • Awareness of accessibility and inclusive development is a plus.

Why CareScribe?

You'll join a small but highly skilled engineering team where your contributions have real impact. You'll work alongside passionate leads, support the development of junior engineers, and help shape the backend systems that power inclusive technology used by people around the world.
