Job purpose
As a Research Technician, you will use your background in agri-tech and Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) to deliver projects at the UK Agri-Tech Centre's facilities based at Stockbridge Technology Centre - our Advanced Glasshouse Facility and Vertical Farming Development Centre. You will be expected to collaborate closely with staff onsite and the wider team.
You will be part of a team of specialists with access to cutting-edge technology, supporting the delivery of projects that include detecting plant traits using advanced facilities and assets, measuring and recording biological data, optimising hydroponic plant production and more. Specific responsibilities will evolve as new projects are won.
You will be required to work on site five days a week at the facility located at Stockbridge Technology Centre (postcode YO8 3TZ). Standard working hours are estimated to be 9:00–17:00, although some flexibility may be required depending on trial schedules.
Key responsibilities
- Support the execution of crop trials across a range of horticultural crops
- Set up, monitor and adjust environmental parameters (lighting, temperature, water, pH, EC, nutrients)
- Conduct practical trial tasks including sowing, transplanting, harvesting and clean-down following trial completion
- Monitor crop development and record agronomic data
- Collect samples and coordinate external analysis
- Assist with designing experimental protocols
- Support equipment troubleshooting and maintenance (within experience level)
- Maintain general housekeeping and ensure cleaning of equipment and facilities, while upholding UK Agri-Tech Centre health and safety standards
- Record keeping, data handling and analysis and scientific report writing
- Desk-based research activities and collaborating with members of the wider UK Agri-Tech Centre network
- Perform technical duties as required
What we are looking for
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Biology or Plant Science
- Experience working in a vertical farm or glasshouse environment is required. We are happy to consider candidates with limited experience, but with relevant knowledge and a good understanding of the environment. Specific onsite training will be provided
- Horticultural research experience
- Understanding of good laboratory practice and the importance of Health and Safety
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Team-oriented with good collaboration skills
- Practical problem-solving skills
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently
- Organised, attentive to detail and able to prioritise tasks effectively
- Excellent time management skills
- Computer proficient with ability to learn new software (for specific instruments)
- Statistical analysis skills are desirable
