Volunteer Assessor

AVPB Volunteer Assessors support our conflict resolution distance learning programme, a six-week correspondence course taken by people in prison or in the community.

As a volunteer assessor, you will be contributing to the quality and impact of our distance learning programme by providing thoughtful feedback and encouragement to learners. Your role helps ensure that participants feel supported and motivated to apply the skills they're learning—ultimately helping our organisation reach more people and create lasting, positive change in communities.
What are we looking for?
Key Skills Required
- At least three years' experience in one of the following areas education/teaching, social work, counselling, mentoring, advice/advocacy.
- Clear and compassionate written communication.
- Ability to encourage reflection without judgement.
- Organisational skills and reliability in meeting deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while staying connected with the AVPB team.
- Familiarity with basic IT (email, Word/Google Docs, accessing shared folders).
Key Knowledge
- Understanding of nonviolence and conflict transformation principles (or willingness to learn).
- Awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Awareness of safeguarding and duty of care.
- Respect for confidentiality.
- Empathy to the challenges faced by people in prison or marginalised communities.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed practice (or willingness to learn)
- Knowledge of and respect for confidentiality.
What will you be doing?
Assessors review completed workbooks and provide written feedback that encourages reflection, growth, and the practical application of nonviolent conflict resolution skills. This role helps participants to deepen self-awareness, build healthier relationships, and develop nonviolent approaches to conflict.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and assess completed workbooks.
- Provide constructive, supportive written feedback.
- Apply AVPB's principles of respect and nonviolence in all feedback.
- Use AVPB's guidance and assessment framework.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Communicate with the AVPB Distance Learning Project Officer about workload and any concerns.
