Job description
The role focuses on shaping and implementing governance mechanisms within Protect, our First Line Economic Crime function, ensuring they effectively manage identified business risks. You'll take ownership of key elements of the Governance and Control Framework, providing challenge, advice and oversight to drive continuous improvement.
As part of the team dedicated to safeguarding Nationwide and its customers from economic crime, you'll work within the wider Governance, Risk and Control group ensuring operations align with policies and meet all legal and regulatory obligations.
This is an 18 month Fixed Term Contract opportunity.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, Northampton, London, Dunfermline or Bournemouth office. Whilst these locations are where we are primarily looking to fill the role, if you're an internal applicant based in a different location we would welcome your application and if successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this could work for this specific role. What you'll be doing
In this role you will lead the design and maintenance of robust governance mechanisms that help detect, prevent and disrupt economic crime. You'll embed ownership and documentation of Protect's processes, working closely with business areas to strengthen and improve their control environment. Supporting teams to demonstrate compliance with internal policies and deliver positive customer outcomes will be a key part of your work.
You'll also manage the development of management information, ensuring reports are accurate, consistent, and provide senior leaders with clear insight into performance, risks and issues. When problems arise, there will be a need to monitor actions to ensure they are resolved promptly, with clear accountability and documentation. Additionally, you'll deputise for the Senior Manager Governance and Control representing the team in senior committees, leading meetings and contributing to strategic projects.
About you
As a minimum requirement you will have:
- Proven experience in developing, implementing and managing governance and control frameworks within a large-scale operation in a risk or compliance role
- A strong ability to interpret risk policies and assess compliance effectively
- Skilled in documenting, implementing, and maintaining control frameworks to ensure operational integrity
- Demonstrated experience in producing high-quality risk and control reports for senior leadership
- A solid understanding of financial services regulations and legal frameworks, including codes relevant to economic crime prevention
- The ability to remain objective and act with independence in decision-making
- Excellent organisational skills with strong planning and time management capabilities
Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:
- Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers' shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind
- Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we're honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand
- Push for better - We don't settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development
- Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes
You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.
