The Opportunity:

Childlight, a global child safety institute, is looking for a PhD Intern to support the creation of the Into the Light global index, which provides estimates on the prevalence of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

You will have expertise in developing protocols, conducting literature searches, extracting data, performing quality assessments, supporting analysis and synthesis, and drafting findings.

This post is part-time (9 hours/week) , and fixed term until Friday 30 April 2027 .

This internship is only open to current University of Edinburgh PhD students who will be based in the UK for the duration of the internship. for PhDs is run by the Careers Service in collaboration with university departments and Schools. It offers exclusive part-time internships at the University all year round.

The salary for this post is £29,588 to £33,951, per annum, pro-rata.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Currently enrolled as a PhD student in a relevant field, e.g. public health, social work, social policy

  • Experience of using data analysis/screening software

  • Experience in conducting research on Violence Against Children, digital safety, or related child protection issues

  • Strong knowledge of epidemiological concepts, study design, and data interpretation, particularly in the context of child protection

  • A passion for making the world a better place and preventing CSEA, improving services and safeguarding children

The University will employ full-time PGR students for no more than an average of 9 hours per week across the academic year (as per its policy ), and you must make sure any employment complies with any visa or funding conditions you may have.

Should you be successful, you will require written confirmation from your academic supervisor that you can undertake the internship. We recommend that students discuss the internship with their supervisor, as well as with their employer, before applying.

The University is unable to sponsor the employment of international workers in this role. International applicants will therefore be unable to apply for and secure a Skilled Worker visa. They will only be able to take up this role if they can demonstrate an alternative right to work in the UK.
