Role Overview

The Treasurer is a key member of the West Norfolk Riding for the Disabled Association, - The Magpie Centre Charity responsible for overseeing the financial affairs of the organisation and ensuring its financial viability. This voluntary position provides an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people with disabilities through equestrian activities. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Maintain an overview of the Magpie Centre's financial affairs, ensuring its viability and that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.
  • Prepare and present regular financial reports to the Trustees, including monthly income and expenditure statements, and cash flow forecasts when needed.
  • Oversee the preparation and filing of annual accounts and reports in accordance with regulatory and charity commission requirements.
  • Ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place and followed.
  • Monitor and advise on the financial implications of strategic plans and projects.
  • Support fundraising initiatives and grant applications by providing financial information and analysis.
  • Act as a signatory for bank accounts and authorise payments in line with the Magpie Centre charity policy.
  • Work closely with the Chair, Secretary, and other Trustee members to ensure the Magpie Centre's financial health and sustainability.
  • Arrange for independent examination and audit of the Magpie Centre charity's accounts, as required.
  • Attend regular Trustee meetings (usually monthly )

Person Specification

  • Financial experience or background in bookkeeping, and accounting, is essential and knowledge of Xero accounting system.
  • Good organisational and numeracy skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to those without financial backgrounds.
  • Integrity, reliability, and a commitment to the aims and values of West Norfolk Riding for the Disabled Association.
  • Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the role.
  • Previous experience in the charity sector or voluntary organisations is an advantage but not essential.

Time Commitment

The Treasurer role typically requires a few hours each month, including attendance at Trustee meetings, fortnightly meeting with the Centre Manager and regular meetings with the staff involved with The Nest. Attendance at the Magpie Centre stable yard to get to know all members of staff and volunteers.   

Preparation of reports, and ongoing financial oversight. Some periods may be busier, particularly at year-end or during fundraising campaigns or specific projects.  

Support and Training

West Norfolk Riding for the Disabled Association offers support and guidance for new Trustee members, including an induction and access to resources from the national RDA network.
