We're supporting the recruitment of experienced Investigators for a newly established national body leading complex and sensitive investigations into historic cases that resulted in death or serious harm. You'll work on important cases, helping victims, families and survivors find the answers they deserve.
About the Role
As an Investigator, you will be part of a high-performing team responsible for undertaking serious and complex investigations into historic incidents resulting in death or serious harm. This role requires a thorough and empathetic approach, ensuring those who submit requests receive clear, timely updates throughout the investigation process. You will be expected to manage multiple investigations simultaneously, applying professional judgement, investigative best practices, and ethical standards.
This is not a traditional law enforcement role — it is one that calls for a commitment to transparency, reconciliation, and restorative justice. The Investigations Directorate is led by a senior figure with extensive policing and public service experience and will operate to the highest professional standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage investigations into serious incidents, applying a range of investigative techniques.
- Analyse and interpret complex information and evidence, including material not previously disclosed.
- Develop and implement investigation strategies and action plans.
- Ensure adherence to legislative and policy frameworks.
- Build, maintain, and manage case files, including for criminal referral where appropriate.
- Engage sensitively with families and individuals requesting investigations.
- Support innovation and continuous improvement within a new and evolving organisation.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders across jurisdictions.
- Contribute to a culture that promotes empathy, professionalism, and accountability.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements:
- PIP2 qualification or equivalent.
- Proven experience conducting professional investigations in a criminal justice or comparable environment.
- High-level problem-solving skills and analytical capability.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to produce clear, accessible reports.
- Skilled at handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced, pressurised setting.
- Ability to respond constructively to feedback and quality assurance processes.
- Proficient IT skills and comfort using case management systems.
- Understanding of — or willingness to learn — the social and historical context of conflict-related investigations and the impact of trauma.
- Willingness to undertake SC security vetting if not already in place.
Additional Information
- This role is office-based, with teams located in Belfast and London.
- Regular travel between sites and to other locations will be required.
- Home working may be possible, subject to operational requirements.
This is a rare opportunity to be part of a forward-looking organisation focused on delivering truth and transparency to those impacted by conflict. We welcome applications from individuals with a wide range of professional and life experiences.
