Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom Speechmatics Full time £42,000 - £75,000 per year

We are looking for a motivated and capable Assistant Accountant, ideally someone mid-way through a CIMA, ACCA or ACA qualification, to join our finance team on an initial 12-month fixed-term basis. The role is designed to provide extra capacity and support our month-end processes, billing, deferred income, tax reporting and audit readiness. There is potential for this role to be converted to a permanent position.

What you'll be doing:

  • Assist with month-end close: prepare and post accruals, prepayments, deferred income, deferred/ accrued income, and other adjusting journal entries.
  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations (e.g. cash, deferred income/liabilities, accruals, other control accounts) to support accurate financial reporting.
  • Take ownership of day-to-day billing and usage-based billing processes, raise invoices, manage deferred/recognised income appropriately, and ensure billing integrity.
  • Preparation of commission statements based on billing data.
  • Support all sales and use tax reporting requirements; work under the guidance of the Financial Controller to ensure compliance.
  • Support audit process (audit due in late January): providing supporting schedules and workpapers to auditors; act as a key liaison between finance team and auditors.
  • Maintain accurate records: journals, reconciliations, documentation of deferred income, usage billing, commission calculations, tax submissions, audit schedules.
  • Provide general accounting support to finance team, helping absorb overflow capacity, including ad-hoc tasks, data entry, ledger maintenance, and assisting with other finance functions as required.

Who we are looking for:

  • Part-qualified (or studying) towards CIMA, ACCA or ACA , combining commitment to qualification and a strong foundation in accounting theory.
  • Previous exposure to month-end accounting routines: accruals/prepayments, reconciliations, deferred income / deferred/deferred revenue or similar.
  • Comfortable working with journal entries, general ledger, reconciliations and reporting under tight deadlines.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills; proficient with Excel (and ideally experience with accounting software / ERP systems).
  • Detail-oriented, organised, methodical. You should be able to manage multiple concurrent tasks, maintain control-account accuracy, and ensure compliance.
  • Good communication, ability to collaborate with senior finance staff, explain accounting treatments, respond to auditor queries, and work cross-functionally (e.g. sales / operations if needed).
  • Flexible, can handle busy periods (e.g. end-of-period close and audit season) and willing to work in a dynamic, evolving environment.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not feel you match all of the requirements exactly. The list of requirements is intended to show the kinds of experience and qualities we're looking for, but it is not exhaustive. If you are interested in the role, the team, and our mission, we would love to consider your application. We are always open to conversations and look forward to hearing from you.
