With the upcoming retirement of the previous post holder, we are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Finance Officer to join our Corporate Finance team, supporting the VAT Manager in delivering a robust and compliant VAT function across Manchester City Council. This is a pivotal role within the Financial Management service, contributing to the Council's tax planning and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and submission of VAT returns to HMRC, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain and reconcile VAT records, supporting the Council's compliance with statutory obligations.
  • Provide support on VAT matters to service departments, including coding advice and transaction reviews.
  • Support the VAT Manager in liaising with HMRC and Internal Audit, including voluntary disclosures and risk reviews.
  • Contribute to the VAT De-Minimis exercise and Option to Tax process.
  • Keep abreast of legislative changes and support implementation across finance teams.
  • Participate in VAT-related training and awareness initiatives across the Council.
  • Support wider corporate finance workstreams.

About You
You'll be AAT qualified or be able to demonstrate a commitment to study.

You'll Have

  • Experience in public sector finance or VAT operations.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret large volumes of financial data and legislation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial systems (SAP preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • Able to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
