This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of Burlington City Hall, 426 Brant Street. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective January 2026 this role will be required to be on site 50% of the time each month.
Position Overview
Under the supervisor of the Senior Planner, Heritage, this position will assist with the implementation of the designation strategy for significant heritage properties in the City of Burlington by providing support with heritage program administration, background research, and administrative tasks, as needed. This position will contribute to efforts to protect and conserve cultural and heritage assets within the City in relation to the impacts of Provincial legislative changes as defined in the Ontario Heritage Act and the Planning Act.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Assist with the implementation of the City's designation strategy for significant heritage properties
Conduct research and analysis of properties on the City's Municipal Heritage Register
Attend site visits, Municipal Heritage Committee meetings and Committee of the Whole and Council meetings, as required
Provide technical support and research assistance to the Senior Planner, Heritage
As a member of the team:
Administer defined procedures and recommend solutions to challenges or process improvements
Work collaboratively with others to deliver the outcomes as defined; report any challenges to supervisor
Respond to customer service concerns, investigating, problem solving, and responding within defined processes and advancing to the attention of supervisor, as appropriate
Maintain documentation and/or databases and corporate records in accordance with policy and divisional practice; consider legislative municipal requirements such as Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA)
Contribute to the development of program needs
Provide data or input on processes to allow reporting and decision making
Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements
You have a university degree in Architecture, Planning, Heritage, History, Canadian Studies and/or a college diploma in Heritage Conservation or a related field along with a demonstrated understanding in areas of heritage conservation. Your knowledge of Ontario Heritage Act policies and processes and heritage-related aspects of the Planning Act is an asset.
To be successful in this role, you have strong research, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills. In our collaborative work environment, your effective communication and customer service skills will help you accomplish the objectives of this role. A demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and tact and maintain a high degree of confidentiality is required. You are proficient in Microsoft Office, the internet and any other related software.
This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities, and you will need to provide your own transportation.
